Unstable
I am a chair
with one leg
shorter than the rest,
I wobble
back and forth
and I tip back
quite easily;
I am unstable.
I am a tree,
toppled over
by the wind,
leaning on
the neighbor trees,
ready to fall
at any given moment;
I am unstable.
I am a farmhouse
abandoned in a field,
my roof is gone
and my walls
lean sharply
to the right,
old and condemned;
I am unstable.
I am a branch
hanging on by a sliver,
struck by lightning,
I sway left and right,
moving with the breeze,
staring at the ground,
preparing to crash;
I am unstable.
This is how I feel,
unstable in the wind,
for my emotions
are out of order,
at any given moment
I could break down
and burst into tears,
for no reason at all.
One minute
I am smiling,
laughing and generally
feeling like myself,
but the next
I am crying,
upon my knees
in the dark.
For the moment
this is my life,
I have more downs
than I do ups,
I never know
when it will strike,
or when the tears
will break on through.
It could be late at night
or early in the morn,
I could be in the middle
of a conversation,
without warning
I may fall prey
to the darkness,
I may collapse in despair.
I am the chair
wobbling back and forth,
I am the tree
toppled over in the wind,
I am the condemned farmhouse
and I am the branch
hanging by a sliver;
I am unstable.
