] Date Posted: 21:30:21 01/14/08 Mon When nature falls... We've stood here for years next to this old white house, we watched neighbors move in and neighbors move out, for whatever reason, no one stayed here long. But we loved every family, especially the kids, they'd run around us, playing cops and robbers or my favorite, hide and go seek. We provided them with shade from the hot sun in the summer, we gave them a special place to rake the fallen leaves of fall. During winter we'd hibernate and in spring we'd reawaken. But this year was different... When we awoke from winter's chill we discovered new neighbors moving into this old house once more, we were excited and ever ready to get to know our new tenants. In greeting we shook our branches, waving hello, when they'd leave the house. But we were ignored and overlooked, it seemed they didn't like us. I brushed it off as nonsense, of course they liked us. Besides, what was there not to like? We were old trees but we were young, fifty years perhaps, we've stood here, long before this house was built. Therefor, we were an asset, an important part of life here. So I insisted that we keep trying, waving our branches, whispering hello, brushing their faces with the scent of pine. Still with each try we were unsuccessful, nothing seemed to get their attention, nothing but their high tech cell phones. They didn't have this long ago, they had a lot less yet seemed happier. So you see, I wasn't sure what to think, would they ignore us forever or would they realize the nature that completely surrounds them? But then one day my questions were answered, not by words, but by a sound on the wind. This sound though, I never expected to hear. It was that of a powerful chainsaw, I didn't want to believe it but I knew... they were going to cut us down. Planted in the ground, we couldn't run. There wasn't anything we could do to fight back, to escape their wrath. In a panic we shuffled our branches, and we called for help, but there was no one to answer our call. First they came for my sister, her screams I'll forever hear, and then my brother, he didn't cry out once, not in outrage, not in fear... but I still felt his agony. Then it was my turn, my turn to fall. How painful it was to feel the chainsaw's teeth crushing into my soul, my heart, my life... All in minutes, it was over, all of us trees ... were gone. Look at the land now, how bare it is. Without us, what would there be? there's no shade to protect them from the sun, no oxygen to give to help them grow, nothing but wood chips covering the grass. Do they not realize what they've done? We are growing fewer and fewer every day, I think it's time all trees become a protected species, that way no one can take our lives for no good reason, no one can shed us of our hope, and no one need worry about losing oxygen. I was once a wise old tree who witnessed much in the lives of others, but now I am but a sorrowful spirit hovering over this barren land, I am connected to this place, to the memories, the love and now despair... © JAH 2005 [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] |

Date Posted: 01:55:41 01/15/08 Tue Sad and so true Janel. You have captured something really unique here. Last year people moved into the house across the road and the first thing they did was cut down the trees. Very sad. I loved this! ash [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

Date Posted: 20:52:54 01/16/08 Wed Thank you Stormheart. Next door to me a long time ago there use to be a small patch of woods that i had always walked through as a kid... and walking past it on the road, i remember the chokecherry trees the most... would stop and pick some on the way past, it always, always was something i looked forward to... then one day new neighbors bought the land, they cut down most of the trees and put a house in it. the choke cherry trees have been gone ever since... i miss them, and i miss the small patch of woods that use to be my place to commune with nature. I'm glad you loved this. [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

Date Posted: 21:09:16 01/15/08 Tue Such an affectionate poem. You know it may seem silly but, talking for the trees does seem to say "Hey, we are alive" right off the bat. I never really understood why they rip down woods and then build three hundred houses so the people can go out and by really small trees for a lot of money that take years to grow. Well, I do understand it. It comes down the developers taking the money for the lumber then making it easy to access the lots. In truth they should put moratoriums on things like that because trees serve many purposes besides being beautiful. Sorry to go off on your thread but, hey, you struck a nerve and that means your words got me going. Big Hug, andy [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

Date Posted: 20:58:23 01/16/08 Wed I've always felt a special connection to the trees, ever since i was a child, they do have voices that i've always seem to be able to hear. When i heard the chainsaws I literally cringed.. i know this may sound strange, but i felt the pain the trees must've felt when they were being cut down... maybe that's jus the fae in me, i am connected to nature after all... Thank you so very much dear Andy, I'm glad this struck a nerve and that this made you think. I truly appreciate you dear heart. Big huggs, Janel [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

Date Posted: 00:47:27 01/16/08 Wed Hello Janel A tale so touchingly captured, with such a powerful message. You are so right, living out in the countryside here, i'm sitting watching out over fields filled with less trees than this time last year, as in the distance the build a few new houses... Loved this. Max [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |

Date Posted: 14:29:09 01/17/08 Thu Janel, I am a tree lover and I too feel them. I love the way you have empathised with them. When I was a child, the Dutch Elms got a disease and had to be destroyed here, huge infernos burnt for weeks it was so sad. Love and hugs, Paul [ Post a Reply to This Message ] |
