Way better, and it would be better yet if VW offers it in a Rabbit.

First, it's 50 state compliant win emissions rules, which only Mercedes has accomplished so far this year.

VW had a Jetta diesel since they had the Jetta, but it was a lowly 70hp thing that made 40 mpg on the EPAs old test. The new specs push everyone back by varying percentages, but the old VW diesel would probably score 32-35 mpg today.

The Jetta hasn't had a diesel since the car was redesigned a couple of years ago. so the new diesel is much anticipated. The base engine doubles the old 70hp to 140 while nearly doubling the mileage, and there is an upgrade in Germany to 170hp that doesn't hurt the mileage by much.

I just saw a test of the Smart on CNN earlier, and they believed Mercedes bogus claim of 40 mpg highway. Real world tests show 32, which is no reason to give up anything for a not-cheap car, whose only real-world merit is you can park it sideways.

I go for the 57 hwy in the Jetta, which might translate to 65 or 70 in the smaller Golf.

I commute 80 miles a day round-trip, so I'm biased to good mileage. My antedeluvian Acura gives me 35.2 which is still better than the Smart.
