Sorry I am writing here though I am a man (with stepdaughter who is already adult) and not a mom, but I strongly feel I should encourage all those great moms who spank their children. You're doing the right thing!
I am from Germany and already 61 and I was studying the history of spanking as a parenting tool and its psychological effects including the results for the adult life since almost 30 years now. During the 1990's I could also coach some moms who needed help.
Spanking children from early age on (but not before age 2) should be a duty to all parents because it is a necessary complementary tool to love and tenderness. And, that should be clear, the basic of all is the deep immovable confidence of the child towards parents. This is the reason why you should always use an implement for spanking. The hand is the symbol for safety, tenderness and protection for your child since he/she was born.
You should also know that there is a difference between (most) boys and (most) girls in assimilating the experience of pain. Most girls have a sort of unconscious affinity to pain and can assimilate it much more productive than the majority of boys who tend to fight against it and to accumulate frustration. So it is more complicated to spank boys in a good and productive way than it is with girls.
From age 2 to 4 girls should get used to strict spankings as the main part of discipline based parenting and I think in most families it is the mom who has the responsibility to do that (it should be done at least every second day). Every man, every husband should very much appreciate that because it is a great responsibility and a very hard and sensible job. I have great respect for every mom who cope with the job to prepare her daughter with the wooden spoon or the ruler for the much more severe spankings that will come when she will be 4 and older.
My experience is though that some moms have some problems doing the job in the necessary consequent way. They love their children and they fear to do something wrong. One of the reasons for that is that parents (moms and dads) often have some sexual feelings in connection with the spankings. If this is the case, don't worry about it. It is an absolutely natural thing and reaction, purely biological and nothing bizarr or pervert. Like everything in nature this phenomenon has its sense: Parents love their children and protect them and so it is very hard to hurt them. But it is necessary. So evolutionary nature developped a little trick... Surely it is nesessary though to keep yourself under control.
I could write so much more about the positive effects of regular ritualised spankings and how they should be executed but I'll stop now. I greet all strict moms and want to encourage you to continue spanking your kids with seriousness, conscientiousness and passion. Over the years I never met a mom who spanked too hard but lots of them who did not spank hard and often enough. So don't be shy, you will be rewarded for it when you'll see how your kids grow up to wonderfull persons.
