When I was Katelyn's age, my deepest Halloween desire was to dress as a Playboy Bunny or a Las Vegas showgirl. I loved the over-the-top glamour (still do), and the idea of being looked at. Feathers, sequins, glitter, lipstick, heels and hose, I wanted to experience it all.

The idea of shedding the preconceived notions of what a boy should be, and establishing my own identity, was what I was searching for.

Kudos for being brave and supportive. It sounds like you are having as much fun as your new daughter, and that is the best news I have heard in years.

When I got to be about 18 and ventured out into what was then a very clandestine community of "gender benders", I was overwhelmed by how elaborate some of the transformations I saw were. People who simply relished being in their own skin, a level of fulfillment that few people ever realize.

Keep up the good work. I have the feeling that Katelyn will grow up to be an amazing person who just might truly change the world for the better. She is special and so are you.
