I liked what you said about "the nail & screwdriver" thing... You mean teaching deductively saves time, is that it? It's more objective...
I think how you present grammar depends on a whole number of factors, actually: your teaching context, the students purpose, age, learning style, time to learn some of the language... (and probably others which are not occuring to me)
What else we'll all be locked in a new paradigm, so to speak: always teach discursively - I've been NOT doing it on many occasions, now with a heavy conscience :-)
