An interesting activity some teachers might want to use is what they call "Reconstrução de Significado"(sorry, I don't know how to properly translate that to English). That means that students are asked to recreate a text in their language instead of translating words literally. When it comes to genre, we could imagine ourselves teaching formal letters, for example. As a possible closing in English, we could have "Yours sincerely". In Portuguese, "Seu sinceramente" would sound weird! In that case, students are not asked to translate the sentence, but to use their prior knowlege on that kind of genre, to give the letter in Portuguese a more adequate closing - "Atenciosamente", for example. This activity could be done the other way around, too. "Recreating meaning" from Portuguese into English.
