Subject: Comments on Acquisitional pragmatics

This subject is connected to the work produced by my group (Pragmatics-cross cultural aspects), and it is something I really liked reading and learning.
The idea is : communicative competence is more important than the accurate use the linguistics components of a language.
When learners are able to use appropriate speech acts in given speech events, selecting adequate linguistic forms to communicate, we can say that they have acquired pragmatic competence.
Recognizing intended illocutionary force conveyed through “attitudes” in the speaker’s utterance is also part of such competence.
Awareness of the L2 sociocultural aspects is essential for efficient communication. An utterance will have different meanings depending on its use - place, people involved, gestures, culture, intention, etc are essential part of the discourse and give different meanings to a single linguistic form.
Acquiring accuracy in L2 grammar is necessary for pragmatic competence, but not sufficient.
As teachers, we must encourage learners to learn about L2 culture, and they will enjoy success.
