Guys,
First of all, this text is really interesting and since the beginning it involved me a lot. I’d like to say that I agree with everything you have mentioned about this topic!

Secondly, I’d like to highlight, in the topic “The Ability to Use Cultural Knowledge” on page 8, the Jiang’s (2000) metaphor that captures the nature of language and culture as a whole, which drew my attention: “communication is like transportation: language is the vehicle and culture is the traffic light”. Very interesting, isn’t it?

Finally, after I have read all the text and the examples provided there, I was wondering about my learning process. When I listened for the first time some expressions in English – some examples are provided below – they sounded too weird to me and I had some resistance in using them.
Good for you! (Irônico?) Break your legs! (Que maldade!)How do you like it? (uhh?)
Other expressions: I love you! (It’s said for American people all the time and for us “Eu te amo” has a great power).
Love, at the end of a message.

Concluding, being aware of the differences in pragmatics meaning made me decrease that resistance. This is what really happens with the learners of L2, when the proficiency is higher; the learners recognize and acquire pragmatic competence the communication turns more natural.
