I think the only thing that really improved on Iowa was one man - Joey Jordison. His drumming is fucking insane on this album, it's not even funny.
I think the problem with it is that, aside from there being spaces to breathe in, the mixing is too good for the album. Andy Wallace has worked absolute wonders with aggressive-sounding bands (Helmet, Nirvana, silverchair, Rage, Linkin Park, everyone else and their mother...), but he's too good of a mixer for Slipknot, the mix sounds disturbingly close to an early Korn album. In fact, Iowa seems to me that it's a better version of early Korn than Korn themselves can do now. Of course, insert death metal beats in the place of the hip-hop beats a la Silveria.
And, the video for Left Behind is great, I managed to see it on MTV, of all places. It appears to be directed by the same guy who did the "Freak On a Leash" video (Dave Meyers??), with the intense coloration, and the not-so-fast change video editing. It's the video they need at this point in their career, because it shows everything they have - the masks, jumpsuits, equipment (the custom percussion kits on hyrdaulics, lol), and live performance styles. The only bone I have to pick with it is that they didn't show enough of 1)Joey, he's the only appealing part of the band from a musician's perspective, and 2)the sludge and Froot Loops, for self-explainatory reasons.
