Chicago is much easier to get around in by car and much cleaner than most US cities of similar size. Great restaurants and museums. Schaumburg is a very nice suburb with a large shopping area loaded with restaurants and very close to the airport.

I've lived all over the US and seen most of the largest cities. Like every city there are areas I would avoid but all the tourist parts of Chicago and museum areas are quite clean and safe. Definitely doesn't deserve all the hate.
