Hey Joel. Great to hear from you.

You are welcome. I like to encourage young people in their endeavors and I welcome whatever opportunity to encourage all of you.

You are quite welcome. We shall see what happens when the scout comes.

Yep. That was real smoothe the way you went about it. REAL SMOOTHE! <grin from ear to ear on Bill's face>

Not really. I made a beeline for the first aid kit to squirt some Bactine on to soothe the pain.

Yep. Me too.

I don't anymore. I know my dad loved me but he wasn't much on showing it, though. When I was your age, I thought of him as distant and uncaring. I only saw my dad cry one time and that was in 2006 when my older brother's remains were found. (He had committed suicide.) I am glad that I did have one last time to tell my dad that I loved him and that was the day he passed. We had him taken to the ER and we had the oxygen turned on full blast. He was coherent but I think he knew the end was coming as he was giving my sister and I last minute instructions. He came home from the ER later that day after we arranged hospice care for him. He passed later that evening in his recliner in the living room. I am glad that he died at home. That was his wish; he didn't want to die in a hospital hooke up to machines. He was 91 which is old for a man. He enjoyed golf and I think he walked the course until he was 75 or 80.

I am not a parent myself but I am an uncle five times over and I recently became a great uncle. My niece had a baby last December and she is supposed to come into town this weekend and bring the baby. I held my niece when she was a baby and now she's had a baby. I don't know if you or any of your buddies have ever held a baby in your arms but I can tell you that it is the MOST AWESOME experience.

Good for you. A suggestion I would have is that when you show your son the paddle your dad used and explain to him that "Uncle Kyle" made that paddle by hand and up to this time, it has only been used on you. And now you are about to use it on him.

Don't worry. I can dish it out as well as take it. :D

Now that you mention it, I would encourage you to not be too hard on your grandfather. You took the whompin' that I no doubt would have received from my mother's father had he lived long enough to see my parents find that pack of cigarettes hidden in my room! He was both a coal miner and a heavy smoker and I am sure he wouldn't have wanted me to make the same mistake he did. >

Another parallel between us is that my grandmother was openly critical of my dad for not spanking us when we needed it.

I don't know.

I think my parents were extremely shellshocked by that and they really didn't know what they were going to do with me; and with my grandpa's death just a few years before that well they were just completely caught off guard; not to mention my extremely young age when that happened.

Smart move on his part. I did try some Skoal once and it was gross to say the least!

How about the Cardinals? They have quite a baseball tradition and I don't think I will be disappointed this year either.
>
Of course the Cards' current series with Philadelphia got overshadowed a bit with the stunt that kid pulled the other night. Picture this. You are at the game with your buddies and you decide to jump on the field. You are then chased down, tasered, handcuffed, and taken away by the police while your father is watching at home on television. I'd be willing to bet he'd be livid seeing all that on television; not to mention your friends' parents and perhaps your principal and your coach. I am guessing you wouldn't be sitting down for a month after everyone gets through with you!

Never got into that much.

I have ancestors who fought in all the wars you mentioned including both sides in the Civil War. I am a descendant of Lord Baltimore so my lineage goes back a long way.

No, although my gym coach spanked me over his knee with an open hand when I was in 7th grade.
>
Hope I answered all your questions. If anything further comes up ask away. Tell Luke for me that I really didn't mean anything by the "cross-eyed look" comment that I tacked on to the end of my response to him the other day. It took me three hours to wade through all his questions but that is still no excuse.
>
Good luck to you all on Saturday and I look forward to more dialogue with all of you.
