Subject: Choosing a President

So all this election talk has got me thinking: how do you really choose a President? Before answering, one must certainly consider these factors:

1) much--perhaps most--of what we hear from the mainstream media is biased and does not take the relevant quotes and issues in their proper context

2) although we may not entirely agree with a party's platform (e.g., the Republicans deep down want a theocracy in which Christianity is in control and the Ten Commandments are in every courtroom... the Democrats deep down want a socialistic economy which takes away the heart of capitalism and creates laziness), we also have to realize that a party will never be able to follow completely through with its ultimate goals since there are so many opposing forces... particularly if we elect a Democrat this time, we will probably still have a Republican Congress

3) often, what they say they will do they don't do anyway once they're in office

With these things in mind, it's difficult for me to decide for whom to vote. When I watch the debates, I find that Kerry shares many more of my values than Bush does, and I also find him much more desirable as a leader, since he comes across as more intelligent, reasonable, and balanced. Although Duane's comments have definitely caused me to rethink my stance on voting for Bush, I still find that I cannot put someone back in office who took us willingly into a war that was not urgently necessary. His "preemptive" philosophy could be an excuse for anything, and his utter disregard for the Constitution is frightening.

I guess for me, it really comes down to which candidate most closely shares my values, regardless of his ultimate goals, since they will never be reached anyway. And Kerry shares my values infinitely more than Bush does, so I suppose I must vote for him.

Any other ideas on criteria for selecting a President are welcome. How are you guys deciding? What are the most important reasons you vote for someone?

My top issues are:

-environment
-religion (or my right to have a lack thereof)
-education
-human rights

What are yours?

Ben
