Here are two ways of viewing the situation. One is that you are hanging over the edge of a cliff by a rope. God strolls up and offers to lend a hand. He says believe in me and I will pull you up. If you don't I'll cut the rope. Lot's of choice right.

The other way of viewing the situation is that you are drowning in the sea in a storm. A life boat comes near by. The man in the boat throws you a life preserver. You are blinded by sea spray and can't see it. It's wet and slips away. He then offers you a pole. Again, it slides from your grasp. You are about to drown. He jumps in the sea and puts you in the boat. He drowns in the process, but you are safe.

Its that simple.
