Author: Retired dancer
Subject: This week…

As a retired dancer I have to say reading this page this week has made me feel incredibly sad and angry. Seeing parents annihilate and bully children who are just doing a sport and art that they love is so wrong - commenting on their standard and whether they deserve to be there or not. Some children are in it for the love of dance and only want to compete with themselves and or just enjoy it and being on that big stage is a way for them to challenge themselves, improve and have fun. It’s no parents business to question why they are there. If you want more majors, a qualifier, or are unhappy with your school or the organisation there there are plenty of options available to you. I am so happy that a forum like this did not exist when I was an actively dancing- it is very toxic and really does not achieve any positives. Children these days from a young age use social media and platforms like this are very accessible and I would hate to think that a child referred to or named on this this week sees what people (who have no business) comment on their ability. We are all very aware of the impact that social media can have on young children and young adults. Let’s think about that before we post on this in future. A big well done to every dancer who competed this week and to the parents who support, cheer others on and lift others up. It was a beautiful week of dancing and Feis TV was a great addition to be able to enjoy part of of the week from home. Well done to everyone involved!
