 I think I was 9 when dad made a paddle out of scrap wood from a remodeling project at our house. Don'y recall just what I did but apparently warrented more than a hand smack. Not sure he made it by himself or with help from the work crew but the scrap wood of baseboard trim would emerge a few days later with a hand grip at one end & a couple rows of drilled holes on the "business end."

For the next 5-6 years it hung in a utility closet just off mom's kitchen where she stored broom, mop, bucket, etc & got taken out when necessary to accompany me to my room where I got my paddling.
