I attended one several years ago, and am interested in comparing experiences. Several notable things for me were the size (and pain level) of the shot, the unexpected injection site, and the lack of privacy. I know that clinics have often been set up to prevent hepatitis, polio (back in the '50s), and for travel or military induction. I'm curious how people reacted to the shot and the whole situation. I did one last week involving 7 young female waitress who had an exposure to hepatitis from a cook who tested positive for hepatitis. I went to the resturant and met with the girls and manager. I explained what hepatitis is and how it effects you and then I told them each would be receiving 2.5cc in each hip. None of them were happy to hear that. I passed out information and they read it. I had them one by one come into the managers office for the shot. One by one they unfastend their jeans and lowered them and bent over the desk. Four of them were wearing thongs. I squeezed their butt cheeks a few times and then placed the 18g needle deep in their butt cheek and slowly injected. Most of them cried after each injection. Four of them had nicely tanned butt cheeks. Two had tattoos on their butt cheeks. The other three girls butt cheeks were pure white. They were all walking around holding their butts afterwards. They would line the kids up usually accompanied by a parent and in turn the kids would have their pants lowered and be lifted onto a table to be at a good working height for the doctor and nurses. My dad was in the military so the process was done in an assembly line fashion. In my case, a technician used a red-tinted alcohol scrub which left a stain on the upper arm where he applied it. I received the injection in that arm & not in my butt as Peter suggested. I remember going through this at least twice & only my infant brother in diapers got the injection in his butt area. The shots were considered to be quite painful, perhaps even moreso for the older kids and young adults, who had much larger doses, but definitely better than getting polio - so people lined up gladly to drop their pants. By the way, this treatment was shown to be helpful in reducing the spread and intensity of polio, so it wasn't for nothing, but the newer and much less painful vaccine that all of us have received was far more effective. I feel badly for the people that had to endure those shots. I would have been mortified, even now as an adult. He came back soon carrying this huge syringe and told me pull down my underwear and bend over table. I lowered them below my cheek on the left side because I wanted the shot on that side. He came over and pulled the right side all the way down and gave me the shot on that side instead. His jab hurt and the shot hurt as well going in. I had a knot for several days. I do not think it hurt as bad as my previous gamma shot and I was prepared for it to hurt worse than it did. This doc gave all my shots a little lower than most nurses do now. I received 7 vaccines in all. The gamma globulin was the worst. Felt like a lump of peanut butter. I dont know how many cc's we were given, all i know is it hurt. Received the globulin in one cheek, and yellow fever vaccine in the other. The other 5 were given in the arms. We were all kind of sick for a couple of days, but after that i never got as much as a runny nose for at least 5 years.
