Does anyone know...or in your humble opionion...does extra needle length make a shot hurt more?
After several months of nagging by my doctor and wife about getting my tetanus booster, I'm finally going to relent and get the shot this Thursday on my next doctor visit. I haven't had any kind of shot in over 28 years. No flu shots, no COVID shots, nothing. So in being so long I'm kind of nervous about it. I get jabbed for a blood draw, which isn't bad. But that only goes right under the skin into a vein. A vaccine goes deep into a muscle, which will probably hurt more. That said, I researched the Tdap booster on the CDC website. They give a set of guidelines for healthcare workers to go by in administering vaccines. According to my body weight (270 lbs) they should use a 22G - 25G needle, 1-1/2" long. I don't ever remember getting jabbed with a needle that long in the past. And a 25G needle is thick as a 0.5mm pencil lead....a 22G is like a 0.7mm lead. All I can say is OUCH!!! It's to my understanding they don't make a 25G needle in 1-1/2". So I'll probably get jabbed with the fatter needle.
To my advantage, the girl that gives shots at my doctor's office I'm told is very good. Only is she good enough to shove that long needle into my arm and inject the vaccine without me jumping out of the chair or pissing myself. I'll try to stay loose, look away and pray for the best.

In general, shots administered deeper into muscle hurt LESS. Muscles which are typically used to give shots have relatively few pain receptors, fewer than the skin above. So the farther from the skin, the better.

With modern needles, you Will not ne able to feel the needle at all, regardless of its length and thickness. I experimented with even thicker and longer needles (up to 18G thick and 5 inch long) and barely felt anything (much to my disappointment 🙂). At least this od my experience. The only thing that can make injection hurt is the medicine itself, but that has nothing to do with the needle size. Or it might have, but indirectly, as Paulo explained - the deeper the medicine is applied, the less it should hurt.

Paulo & Coltonzg.....You guys are 100% RIGHT! I got the shot at the very end of the Dr visit. That girl that gave me the shot, I don't think she realized how much I was dreading it. She asked me what my dominant arm is. I hesitated at first before saying my right. She prepared to jab me in my left arm. I got a glimpse of the needle while she swabbed my arm, it was long like I feared. I looked the other way because I didn't want to see her shove all that into me. My heart was racing, but I didn't tense up.
Honest to God, all I felt was her fingers bunching up flesh. I didn't so much as feel the slightest pin prick. I was like "damn! I didn't feel anything!" She didn't put a bandaid on it because I didn't bleed. And so far today I'm not even sore. I'm glad it's over with. I had a bad experience with a penicillin shot in the ass when I was 10 years old. It hurt so bad. That has fueled decades of phobia about shots. The nurse that got me yesterday did a world of good to end that.

I think the way needles are made nowadays, they're so sharp they slide right into tough muscle tissue like a knife through hot butter. If the nurse or whoever gives the shot uses proper technique, the needle jab itself can almost not even be felt a lot times. And proper technique calls for using a fluid and sudden darting motion. I can't stand for the nurse to slowly slide the needle in. That can hurt.

The tip or bevel of the needle is edged like a razor. You can drag the tip of it across a sheet of notebook paper, and it will cut right through it. The outside surface of the needle itself is also coated with a material to make it smoother going in. Million dollar robots manufacture these things to minute tolerances. Compare this to the fact that in the old days, clinics reused needles. Nurses even had to take time to periodically hone a rudimentary edge when they got dull.

I was expecting my tetanus shot to hurt when I ripped my hand open on a large staple. It merely felt like the nurse gently touched me with a ballpoint pen. That was all. But I was sore as hell the next morning.

If you want the needle to hurt then it is the technique you use. I thought everyone knew that. You don't just jab it in like you are supposed to. Use a large gauge size like a 16G and then alcohol swab the site. Don't let it dry but instead, keep it wet. First before you actually insert the needle, you barely touch the skin with the needle point. (This activates the brain into knowing it's going to hurt here) Then you very slowly break the skin as you slowly push the needle in. Even only go about 5 millimeters and hold it there for a few seconds. It will begin to burn and maybe even dribble some more alcohol on the site. Then push it the rest of the way in. It will hurt using this technique. I had an old hag do a punishment injection on me and I felt all of it.

I had a shot right before spine surgery and didn't feel the needle at all......BUT

My heart began to race when the nurse said I have a shot for you...

I was pissed because a minute after, the medicine burned like crazy and thats the last thing I wanted before being rolled in for surgery. It supposedly was some medicine to dry me up.

But I had 4 spine surgeries before that and do injection was given. Go figure!

So while I was being wheeled in, my butt hurt!

Tim
