I am asking this as a serious question and hoping for serious answers. My YOB was 1967 and you got shots in the bottom coming and going at most trips to the Dr's office and certainly in hospital stays. how likely would someone born in 1995 be to have ever had a shot in the bottom and at about, give or take, what age would the average person born in 1995 have had their last shot in the bottom? BTW: we're talking females slightly over males.

Giving intramuscular injections in the dorsogluteal site (i.e., what most people would call the "bottom") is no longer recommended as it's possible to damage the sciatic nerve. The ventrogluteal site (i.e., the "hip") is now recommended. They can of course also be given in the deltoid muscle (arm), but with small children this is often avoided as the muscle mass is smaller.

If you think the bottom only as the dorsogluteal site, then some children have never received such inoculations. But many older doctors and nurses learned this way and still use it.

If you think of the ventrogluteal site also as the bottom, then virtually any child who has had his inoculations will have received one there. When any given practitioner would switch to the deltoid muscle would depend on personal choice, the size of the child, and the medicine delivered. Thicker medicines or medicines in large quantities would be switched later.

Many but certainly not all children are switched for the series of inoculations that occur around ages 5-6 before they start school.

It's difficult to say. It's certainly true that some people now that age were given inoculations in "the bottom" when they were children. Whether or not a particular person was would depend on the doctor/nurse giving the injection. The older they were, the more likely they would have trained that way and have used that site.

Also I do not know the the common practices in countries other than the U.S. except that many foreign doctors and nurses do study here.

Jonathan thank you so much for what I believe to be an honest answer. After doing some research I have found that the dorsogluteal site is exactly what I was talking about. it sounds to me like it is very unlikely that someone born in 1995, who would be 19/20 years old now, has ever had an injection/shot in the dorsogluteal site. Please correct me on this if I am wrong.

Any girl getting the depo contraceptive injection would have one in the bottom every three months.

Hi again,
I responded to your question on the RTMB, so I'll do likewise here.
It will depend on a number of factors. It could be an age factor, it could be an inability to take a buttocks shot or the ability to take it (which if it's the same provider, would know this), it could be the speed in which the anti-biotic if that's the case, needs to get into the body. I'm not certain but I believe the Gardasil series for teens are given in the buttocks. I think you will still find those in the age grouping you're asking about, do for a variety of reasons, receive injections in their butt cheeks.

Thanks for answering all. I wanted to say that I found out that the girl in question did get a shot in her bottom at age 11 because some kind of insect bit her. She also didn't take the shot well at all and screamed bloody murder the whole time and cried after the shot was given.
