Lie flat on your stomach and point your toes inward. it relaxes you butt muscle to make it less painful. Tell them you will pull down your panties once he or she has the shot ready. Do bare your entire butt so it is given in the right location. There is no need to bare you butt to see if you are having a reaction. You will have hives on your body, trouble breathing. Also a quick slap to the butt cheek just before the stick takes away the pain of the needle going in your bottom. What was the name of the shot you got?

Lying in that position with my pants down made me feel like I was going to get a spanking, so if the nurse were to smack my bottom before she stuck me it would surely worsen my grief.

Leah,
I'm familiar somewhat with clinical trials, having been involved in one that I remember quite well; where my rectal temperature was repeatedly taken over a number of days. For me, it wasn't embarrassing; though a three minute wait with a glass type thermometer inserted seems like a very long time, and I'd no sooner have my underpants back up, and next thing I knew, they were being lowered and the thermometer getting placed in my rectum by one of the study groups members. sometimes an MD sometimes a nurse or assistant, but none the less I got numerous rectal temperature readings taken; though I was well compensated, and I'd do it again if I could. But with you, what type of clinical study would you subject yourself to, where it appears repeated injections are given in your buttocks; and are they saline injections or are medicinal agents injected? I've never heard of clinical trials involving buttocks injections, unless it's in the case of a trial where long needles were injected into the skin, through the fat and into the muscle. This was a study done in Ireland. See attached: Vhttp://www.medpagetoday.com/MeetingCoverage/RSNA/2214 I believe this is also on You Tube. I've seen it. Hope you're feeling better.

Thanks Richard. The trial is for a possible treatment for a condition I have that has not responded to other treatments. They clearly are not saline injections, and I am not being paid to participate. I am continuing with the trial simply because the pros outweigh the cons.

Well, I got to lie with my pants down again today. I have one miserable bottom!! I am still quite sore and bruised from Saturday's shot. I can take a lot of pain but this is excruciating. I had a very difficult time sitting at my desk when I got back to work, but I didn't want my coworkers to suspect I had just gotten a shot in the butt so I sat anyway with the help of Advil. I cannot wait to get home and ice my behind.

Just like last time the nurse came in several times to check my bottom but at least she covered my butt with a sheet in between checks. One time she left to get two colleagues so they could look at, feel and discuss my bottom too. It was explained to me that as part of a clinical trial they must monitor and record immediate injection site reactions and therefore are required to keep checking my bottom. It is still humiliating.

My next shot is scheduled for Friday. Both cheeks are wounded - where's she going to put it??! I just know I will scream if she sticks it in a bruise.

Hi again, Leah,

If you want to see the video I linked you to in the article, it is on YOU Tube under the title: Intramuscular Needle injections: Does size really matter?

Leah,
You say you got these injections in a clinical trial. I find it very unusual for those conducting the trial to have not told you what type medications you would be injected with. I mean, I'd think that if you were given something you were allergic to, you could have had some problems.

Were your vitals signs taken before and after these injections? I've had injections given at home by visiting nurses, but knew what I was getting and why, but anytime I had to receive these injections, before the injections, when my vitals were done, my temperature was always obtained rectally. The after portion was done the next day when a follow up for vitals was done. My temperature, monitored rectally was to see if I'd had a reaction that started me running a fever. Did you have rectal temperature readings taken during your trials?

Leah did you get another shot in your bottom today? What is the medicine they are giving you. If you don't mind how old are you and are you a thin or medium build?

Yes, worst one yet.

I do not know what drug I am being given. I will find out when the trial ends.  I only know by seeing the syringe that it is yellowish/green and 4cc.

I am 33 and small.

How many more? What illness do you have that is requiring this?

I will have three more for a total of six. Yesterday's shot didn't have to go into the bruise left by shot #1 as I feared. The nurse said she would give remaining shots below the previous ones to avoid that, and that there should be just enough room on my behind to complete the series, joking "any more than that would have to be continued on the next bottom!" Just as long as it is not my bottom!

The problem with getting injections low in the bottom is that they can leave you unable to sit down. I speak from experience!

Leah,
Thanks for clarifying that your shots were for a medical condition, requiring a medication that might be of help to you. But I still think the staff particularly the person in charge, clinically of the trial, should have advised you of what you were being given. Had they, and it was a drug injected into you previously you could have avoided the pain and soreness and whatever embarrassment you might have experienced.
The pros hopefully are the outcome you want; and I'd say you should inquire just before the end of the trials if any compensation is forthcoming. It's very unusual that such trials don't have the $$$ incentive for a volunteer. Good luck.

Richard, a few more clarifications, if I may:

It is 100% certain that I've not been injected with this drug before; the manufacturer is currently seeking FDA approval to market it - thus the trial. I was, however, advised beforehand how the drug was to be adminstered, as well as the potential results of receiving such a large volume injection.

I did not volunteer for the trial. My participation was solicited.

Improved quality of life, possibly extending my life, and being part of making a potential new treatment available to other women is compensation enough for me. Being paid for my participation would be an insult.

Thanks Leah,
You've cleared up my questions completely. I hope the drug works out to be as good a product as its makers want it to be and that it hopefully can help other women.

No problem. Obviously you were jumping to some very wrong conclusions.
