Getting shots as I recently have been getting, I found, though somewhat sore being the injections were IMs, if the nurse giving the shot was using a really sharp needle and he/she knew the proper procure for a buttocks/gluteal injection, as in my case; the needles went in and it was almost not noticeable. 1 1/2" 18g. I attribute that to the sharpness of the needle and its beveling. Later on after the injection, my muscle(s) were sore from both the medication injected and the penetration of the needle into my muscles. I also found, the immediate application of a relatively warm, moist cloth on the injection site was helpful in alleviating some discomfort.
As for needle lengths, I did see a presentation of a study (I think in Ireland) where volunteers whose fat affected the absorption of medications, were given injections under controlled circumstances with three inch needles, and after scanning, the evidence was clear the longer needles were effective in penetrating the skin, fat and going into the muscle. http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1530426/posts
