Carribean/Americans Summary of Miss Uni 2001 -- Stars, 06:25:56 07/15/01 Sun

Jacqueline was a pretty woman who grew tremendously every time she stepped on a runway. It is funny, but I thing she was more the Miss World type and Paulina Flores was the Miss Universe type (Paulina would have placed in Puerto Rico, without a doubt). Jacqui has the personality and the charisma. She was always a favorite in Puerto Rico, but some people think she did not shine on the preliminaries. I would be pleased to see her among the 10, but I was not surprised with her not making it.(HF)

One of my big favorites until preliminaries night! There she fell considerably, I don't know what happened, but she didn't shine when she was supposed to. (JC)

Mexico had lots of charisma and energy on and off stage. Her great personality made her one of the local favorites. (Ed)

This girl had a great personality, and that made her shine everywhere she went. She looked very confident at all times...and although I do not think that her beauty was as impressive as that from other girls in the pageant, her attitude made her top ten material. Her national costume I found gorgeous, and she had impressive eloquence. I think Mexico did a great job in this pageant...she was the best she could be. (Luis)

Miss USA is a delegate I have mixed feelings about. Those who read my Pasarela 2001 comments know I loved her back then, but the truth is: she did not shine in Puerto Rico. It is true that many locals always mentioned USA as a favorite or possible finalist. Also, we cannot deny that Kandace has many qualities. However, most of us started doubting that she would make the cut when after tripping four time during her evening gown competition, some people who claim to have seen the judges' scores affirmed that her marks were mostly in the low 8s (8.0 to 8.3) and that she even got two 7s. The fact was reported in Puerto Rican newspapers, since different people were giving them the same information. After learning that, even a local respected missologists who got 8 of the 10 finalists, did not have Miss USA in his top 10 list. When Miss USA was called as one of the 10, I confess that I was in shock, stunned, surprised. Some people thought that not even a 9.9 in interview would be enough, but mathematics helped the American delegate - it proves the the interview competition can make a huge difference in the semi-finalists' outcome. As a semi-finalist she did significantly better and deserved her spot among the 5 finalists. Her gown was finally good and she had a fit and athletic figure. The interviews came, and honestly I think she did not do well there. You take photographs to a desert island when you could have chosen anything in this world? How about food and shelter?? Her family members would remain in her memories, but eating the photographs would not be of much help. The impression I got was that Miss USA was too 'pageantry', too 'Miss America', too coached. But then again, she is a beautiful woman and had her good moments. Top 10 material, no doubts. However, 3rd place was the result of 5 or 6 American judges out of 8. National directors complained about it once again, asking for a panel of judges diverse and with 8 people from 8 different countries. That's how it used to be in the 50s and 60s, times when the list of semi-finalists and finalists were much more diverse thatn today's. (HF)

Kandace is a vivacious young woman who since Miss USA, demonstrated that she has a way with words. The uncomfortable moment she had during her gown presentation, was obviously overcome by a great interview, her strongest asset. (Ed)

Miss USA did OK in the preliminaries, although there's something about her that really bothers me... Maybe an inclination to the front when she walks. She tripped four times in evening gown... (JC)

Miss USA was a survivor. She won her state pageant by beating the big favorite, a former Miss Teen USA, who ended up being the first runner up. After that, she won her national pageant, after the big favorite from Missouri stumbled in the semifinal question. In Miss Universe, the story almost repeats herself by placing as the second runner up. Kandace herself stumbled in the preliminaries, and she made a smart decision by changing her evening gown for the final night. Her strong points: her classic beauty, toned body, elegance, well prepared interviews. Her weak points: she is not the most photogenic, and there is something about her nose. (MT)

Denise Quinones competed at home, which gave her advantages and disadvantages. One of four favorites for the crown, at the final night of competition it was clear the miss Universe title would be hers or Miss Greece's. Miss Puerto Rico, with the support of her people, shinned. A radiant smile, amazing stage presence, the right make up, the right hair style, evening gown and the right answers pushed her all the way to the top. All details were well taken care of, and although Greece was my #1 choice, Denise took the crown deservingly so. This young woman was at the right place, at the right time. One thing I did not appreciate, and it was not her fault, was the 'special treatment' Miss Puerto Rico received during the 3 weeks of competition, noticed by delegates and pageant fans. So far she is doing a great job as Miss Universe. (HF)

Puerto Rico's Denise Quinones, was always one of the clear options for the crown, however it was her amazing preliminary performance, that boomed her all the way to the first place. Her participation in gown was simply perfect...no details were left unpolished. She won fair and square and I even said that if I worked for the Miss Universe Organization, she was the kind of girl I would look for. She had the support of her whole island, which in some cases, is hard to achieve. And she also won because as you could see, she really, really wanted it, and it showed. Congratulations to Denise! (Ed)

A well deserved crown - beautiful girl, well prepared, great stage presence, poised, elegant, big smile, good answers. In my opinion, her only drawback is her high pitched voice, not pleasant at all (well then again, perhaps it does not help that we got used to Lara's deep, sensuous voice). The local crowd went crazy when she won, as it was expected since throughout the three weeks that the candidates were there, Denise had always the spotlight. I had never seen such an excessive coverage for 'the local girl' as in Puerto Rico. (Marcio)

If at any moment I thought that Puerto Rico was not going to win the pageant, it was because of it being the host country. I believe that this girl was a strong contender for the crown ever since the beginning of this pageant, and remember thinking many times that if the pageant were to be held elsewhere, she would have great chances of winning. In my opinion, she did not look her best at all of the activities before the pageant, but did look stunning in some of them. And both in the preliminary competition and the final night, she looked just awesome. She knew just when to walk, how to pose, how to smile...she was great all the way and it was obvious that she was having a good time. At first, I thought it was awful that she had paused during the last interview with the judges, but afterwards, I thought about it, and I believe it was not bad at all...after all they were asking her if there was anything she would change from her past, and the fact that she was just going through her life to see if there was something she would change, made her answer seem natural, honest and though out, instead of rehearsed. After doing this she says, without a doubt, "I have no regrets". To finish off this review of our new Miss Universe, I believe that between her and Greece, any which one would would've made a great Miss Universe, and I think both of them did outstandingly well. In terms of runway presence, though, I think Puerto Rico did a better job, and so believe that she was a great choice. (Luis)

She looked simply spectacular. In the preliminaries she did an awesome job, demonstrating confidence, sassiness, and projecting well with all displaying elements necessary for a delegate to win in seconds. I did not like her make up, national costume, and crazy hair in the preliminary swimsuit competition. For the rest, she did an excellent job. (LA)
