European Summary for Miss Uni 2001 -- Stars, 06:18:58 07/15/01 Sun

It is the first time in the history of the pageant a contestant that to cope with the accusation of being a man. After such humiliation I was very happy to see Elodie among the 10 finalists. If tomorrow we learn Miss France 2001 was indeed a man (which I do not think she is), she will deserve even more credit for having arrived this far. I was not impressed by her looks, however, she was classy, elegant, and had a wonderful personality. During rehearsals Miss France was always laughing, dancing and talking to her friends. (HF)

This is the classic example of perfect beauty gone wrong. I believe Miss France was one of the most beautiful faces of the pageant (another classic beauty). Throughout the three weeks of her stay in Puerto Rico she always showed up with great dresses and clothing…and looked ravishing. She is also EXTREMELY nice, one of the nicest girls that I had the chance of speaking with, and I felt very excited when she made it to the top ten. MAJOR FLAWS: Even though she was one of the ones who looked genuinely happy and surprised to make it to the top ten, she did not have the catwalk moves. Everybody has mentioned the stiff shoulder. I did not like the dress at all. It did not favour her in any way, plus the long gloves sort of made the shoulder stand out even more. I believe that with another dress, hairstyle and model attitude, Miss France could've at least made the final five. (Luis)

Elodie Gossuin was obviously affected by the rumours surrounding herself, however she managed to overcome it with the help of the organization and the big support of the locals that she got. She was no surprise in the top 10 as she did very well in the competitions. (Ed)

Her performance was ordinary in my opinion. She did not have much of a good stage presence and she seemed to be too reserved and shy. At least this is the impression I got from her... (JC)

After two 2nd runner-ups in a row, many people thought Spain would finally win a 2nd Miss Universe crown with Eva Siso. Eva had the most perfect figure in Puerto Rico, but she did not seem to be there to win. At the final competition she did not demonstrate any enthusiasm on stage. The expression on her face said "What am I doing here??". A 'love or hate it' evening gown (which I personally hated) worsened things even more and even with her spectacular looks she ended up in 6th place. She also finished in 6th place in our ranking. (HF)

I did not like her in the beginning but after a while I started seeing some of her qualities. She had no sparkle and talking was not her thing. Loved her in evening gown though, the feathers on her dress were beautiful. (JC)

Latinas Summary for Miss Uni 2001 -- Stars, 06:16:02 07/15/01 Sun

The first time I saw Eva in pictures I did not like her. I thought there was something shocking about her that did not fit with the image of a queen. Boy, was I wrong. It is with Eva that I could understand that you cannot judge the girls by the pictures, you have to get to see them in action. The first time I saw her in person, I had no doubt, this girl was Miss Universe material all the way. She had the looks, the moves and the personality. She did awesome at the preliminary competition (although I did not like the preliminary evening gown) and even best on the final night. She looked great in swimsuit, great in evening gown, and did a great job in the interviews. Personally, I believe she should've been in the top three, and with these three beauties in the final round, it could've been anyone's crown. (Luis)

Exceptional job. A tanned body, a different but nice dress, much confidence and a nice personality were some of her characteristics. I loved chatting with her. She is very genuine and sincere. What I did not like was her hair up, it made her look older. (LA)

Miss Colombia did not have one of the best catwalks in the group. Nevertheless, she scored very high in both swimsuit and evening gown. Her gown was one of the most elegant during the preliminaries. Expected to be in the top 10, her final score might have dropped dramatically after her interview. Days after the pageant she had her moments of fame with talk show host David Latterman joke about her talent competition being swallowing 50 balloons filled with cocaine. She was invited to the show to receive his apologies for the grotesque joke. (HF)

I liked Miss Colombia in the beginning, but as the days went by I started loosing interest in her. Her hair was a mess at preliminaries night, however, her gown was very nice. I am sure she did well there. (JC)

I compare my experience with Colombia as the opposite of the Brazil experience. I must admit I did not think anything spectacular about Miss Colombia until the preliminary competition. Yes, I thought she looked good, but normally was not impressed in the activities. But she did her best at the preliminaries and she looked awesome. She looked great in night gown and swimsuit, and did a pretty good runway. That night I thought it very possible that she would make the finals. (Luis)

Asian Summary for Miss Uni 2001 -- Stars, 06:12:24 07/15/01 Sun

I always knew Celina would be up there. She had a great figure and elegance, her face was one of the most stunning ones (gorgeous and very expressive eyes!), and she was very intelligent. Something funny is that when she was asked the final question (If you could change anything in your past, what would it be?) I told Luis, who was sitting right next to me: "You will see, 4 of the 5 will say they wouldn't change anything, because their mistakes made them grow, and bla, bla, bla". Right I was, and the one who actually was sincere and looked for something she would have changed was Miss India. I give her a lot of credit for that. She deserved her placement and Celina certainly has a bright future ahead of her.. (HF)

She did a good job, but did not impress me as some former Miss Indias. She looked better in the finals than in the preliminaries. What was all that oil on her body for her swimsuit presentation. She looked amazing in her national costume. (JC)

Asian Summary for Miss Uni 2001 -- Stars, 06:09:57 07/15/01 Sun

After Miss Korea won the best national costume award she started being noticed by the local media. She went down at preliminaries night. In the swimsuit competition there was something odd on her belly which was noticed and commented by a lot of people. Then she came out dressed like a Barbie doll for the gown competition. At the point we knew that not even her doll face and sweet personality were going to take her somewhere in the pageant. At the coronation ball Miss Korea looked better than ever. With good coaching she could have made it, but Sa-Lang Kim lacked that. (HF)

Even tough her national costume was spectacular, Miss Korea did not impress me in the really important competitions. In swimsuit sucking up her belly looked really bad. Her gown looked like a cheap version of a Korean national costume. Not impressive in my opinion. (JC)

Best national costume, nice smile, great hair.(Ed)

Miss Singapore was a very pleasant surprise. Cute as anything, she displayed a lot of good taste and elegance in the last week of competition. An above average performance in the preliminaries should make her countrymen very proud. Her national costume was one of the very best in my opinion. (HF)

She did really well in evening gown, but definitely not as well in swimsuit... (JC)

Asian Summary for Miss Uni 2001 -- Stars, 06:08:14 07/15/01 Sun

In recent years Malaysia's performance in Miss Universe can be considered mediocre when compared to its performance in Miss World, where this Asian country has had many favorites and even a couple of semi-finalists and a runner-up in the last decade. Mei Chin Tung had beautiful hair and an interesting national costume. Her evening gown was either very similar to or the same used by Miss Malaysia/Universe 97. Wrong move... (HF)

A very fashionable girl. Even though I can't see her in the top ten, she does have that model look. I think in her case, she should've kept away from the straight hair look....I think some volume would've done wonders for her. (Luis)

Thoughts on Top 10 in 2001 -- Aisha, 10:04:57 06/06/01 Wed

Being that I am majoring in fashion design, I just love to watch Miss Universe and see the different styles and gowns. I know it's a little late to be posting my opinions on the top 10 and my own personal top 12, but here it is anyway..

1st off..

1. Spain- An absolutely gorgeous girl with a killer body. In my opinion she had one of the, if not THE, best bodies in the entire competition. Some said she didn't seem to care how she looked or walked when she was on stage, but that wasn't the impression I got at all. I thought her movements and attitude were just very simple and innocent during swimsuit, similar to Miss Spain 99. During eg she seemed very sure and full of sex-appeal. Though her gown was somewhat unique for a pageant, I loved it! She wore it very well and it grabbed your attention. It was very daring and stylish. I felt she should have made top 5.

2. Venezuela- Don't get me wrong. I usually adore the delegates from Venezuela! But I was very dissapointed in their rep. this year. I felt Eva lacked the spark and charm that usually sets Miss Venezuelas above their opponents. Even her face ans smile seemed lackluster. In swimsuit, she looked great from the front and really had the catwalk down. But when she turned around, I was stunned. I personally felt that her behind needed a little more toning. As rude as this sounds, I thought it looked saggy and somewhat distasteful. Not the normal body of a typical Miss V. In eg, I was even more let down. Yes, the gown is nice, but in my mind, only for a smaller scale pageant. I'm used to Miss V. blowing me away in eg (ie. 00,97,96,94,92, 90)I thought she looked a little out of place, too casual. Again, nice walk, bad image. I think she should have reversed her sf and prelim decisions. In answering her questions, I thought her lack of spark really showed. I thought she seemed very dull. Nothing she said impressed me. I didn't think she deserved a spot in the top 5.

3. Nigeria- Beautiful face and charming expressions. But in my humble opinion, not top 10 material. Her ss presentation was lackluster, to me. Her body wasn't all that great and her stance was way too casual. In eg, I thought she looked VERY tacky and outdated. The top of the gown didn't even fit her and all the fake jewelry didn't do her justice. For a sf spot, I would have replaced her with Miss Angola.

4. Israel- Another pretty face, but that's it. She had one of the worst bodies in ss. I have nothing against short delegates, but she looked stocky and her hips/thighs were a little too large. In eg, from the neck up she was stunning. But from the neck down she was way, way too casual. The black dress was nice, but not Miss Universe evening gown material. I don't think she deserved a place in the top 10.

5. Greece- WOW! She blew me away. Not necesarily the prettiest face, but everything else made up for it. In ss, she had one of the best bodies and THE BEST cat walk. She really knew how to work the stage and her stance was great. I thought she deserved 1st in ss. In eg, she was fabulous. That gown was very chic and stylish. And once again, she knew exactly how to work every movement of the gown. She truly exemplified the "model-look". In the interviews, I wasn't really impressed. It was obviously due to her lack of english, but she was repetitive and seemed to stumble. I did appreciate her sincerity, though. I don't think she deserved the crown, but top 5 was deffinately where she needed to be.

6. India- Another dissapointment for me. Obviously, not another Lara, Madhu, or Manpreet. In ss, she looked like a "Miss Teen India". Her body was too greased up and not impressive at all. Her height really hurt her, in my eyes. Plus, I found it uncomfortable to watch her battle with those shoes. In eg, she looked tacky and cheap. The gown was TOO MUCH. Not the usual simplicity and elegance that most indian delegates have had. In her questions, I thought she sounded like she was trying desperately to sound "mature and eloquent", but couldn't pull it off. Overall, she pailed in comparison to other Miss Indias. I didn't even think she deserved a spot in the top 10.

7. Russia- In all honesty, she did impress me, but in the end was obviously out of place. She had a gorgeous face. Very mysterious looks and capturing eyes. She actually reminded me of a european Delta Burke (lol). She had incredible stage presence. She knew exactly how to walk and gave the audience/judges very sexy looks. In ss, her body was nice, but her stance was what hurt her. In eg, the gown was obviously outdated, but I give her snaps because she worked it to the best of her potential. Didn't deserve top 10, but I still liked her.

8. USA- A great girl who truly deserved her success. In ss, she had a very nice tanned and toned body. She had a very reserved stage presence and seemed sweet and humble. At points during ss, she reminded me of Misty Giles, Miss TX Teen USA 99. I was actually dissapointed in her eg. I LOVED her prelim choice. It was incredibly elegant and simply breath-taking. Her sf choice was nice, but I felt a little too simple. In her interviews, she really impressed me. Kandace was very quick, witty, and showed her intelligence, (eventhough I thought the toursit remark was a bit off-the-wall lol) Overall, I deffinately thought she deserved a high placing. Kandace was great.

9. France- 1st off, a very pretty face. From the neck up she was a doll. But after that, what in the world was she doing in the top 10? In ss, she had a nice tan and her body was ok, but not impressive. Her obvious down point, was her right arm. It was very uncomfortable to watch. Her eg was probably the tackiest on stage. The material, the fit...nothing worked. Eventhough I thought she was very sweet and nice, she had no business being in the top 10.

10. Puerto Rico- And finally the home-town girl. In my opinion, the best Miss Puerto Rico, since Desiree Lowry. Denise had a gorgeous face and INCREDIBLE stage persence. If Miss Greece had the best cat walk, then Miss P.R. had the best overall stage presence. In ss, I agree that Denise could have used a little more color, a better tan. But her body was very nice, not the best, but very nice. And she really knew how to work the stage. In eg, she was THE BEST. I have never seen a lady with such sex appeal, stage presence, etc. in eg. Her gown was absolutely gorgeous, and from the looks she gave to the stances she took, she was #1 in eg. Her 1st answer was great. Very well said. She stumbled just a bit in her final answer, but she was still one of the best. In the end, the crown deffinately belonged to her.

In the end, I felt that the following delegates made top 10 due to political/media reasons...
1. Nigeria
2. Israel
3. Russia
4. France

My own top 12,( I still prefer 12), was..
1. Spain
2. Venezuela
3. Netherlands
4. Switzerland
5. Greece
6. Ireland
7. Colombia
8. Canada
9. Mexico
10. USA
11. Antigua & Barbuda
12. Puerto Rico

Remember these are just my opinions. No offense to anyone! :-)

Be Careful In Purchasing Tapes -- Joy Seng, 22:06:28 05/28/01 Mon

Hello:

I know that this message may not be relevant to most of you but I am posting it here to warn any person about this. Hope that all of you will not mind that I am using up a bit of space in this message board.

I was cheated by a person called Angelito M. Comia (e-mail address angelcomia@hotmail.com), commonly called himself as Angel about close to US$300 by promising to sell me 11 pageant tapes but never delivered it. He stayed in Pasig City, Philippines and have requested me to deposit themoney into his account in Bank of Philippines Island Family Bank (BPI) first before sending me the tapes.

He posted a message more than a year ago in Pageant Central Message Board mentioning that he has Miss Universe 1966 to 2000 and wanted to look for any buyers. I e-mailed with him and agreed on our deal and deposited all the money in his bank account. However, I never recieved any tapes. After that, he started to be unfriendly (even though he did yell before earlier when I took some time to deposit my money into his bank account) and claimed that he had sent the tape. However when I asked him for the receipt, he claimed that he also lost it. Who will believe him? After that, he hardly replied my e-mail and even make-up stories that he is in hospital and others. He said he will send me another set of tapes but I never recieved them too. After more than one year until now, I still haven't recieve my tapes.

Pageant fans, please do not be cheated by him if you are intending to purchase tapes from him (even though it may be easy for him to use another name or info). Thank you.

Questionable Donald's Deed -- $$$, 08:45:38 05/28/01 Mon

First off the top ten. The number one spot does not surprise me considering the megga support this candidate had durring competition. As a judge without even realizing it you would easily give this girl top scores as that crowd made her standout. Number two I'm not so sure of but I do believe Greece was up there in top 5. USA'S placement at 9 really makes this list look bogus. This placement is a wish for those that tried very hard to get her out of the way by suggesting her stumbling problem durring prelim gown had eliminated her chances for top ten. We all snickered at that campaign. I truly believe, as it was proven on finals night, that USA was more than likely in top 3 after prelims as well. Look at her placement when being called for top ten. Those that fare better durring prelims are always called later. This is something we all know. I also truly believe that France made it just barely as the number 10 candidate not number 4. Simple math and observation tells us she was top 20 material but I'm sure the topic about her scandal made her a standout in prelim one on one interviews and she fared well in that category. I see her at number 9. Spain and Venezuela are also an interesting placement at numbers indicating a top 5 placement.

I do think they were in the top 6 or 7 as well. Not so sure this was thier actual numbered placement though. These two were very good in presentation and poised a real threat on finals night if they had been called in the last half with Puerto Rico and USA. Another indication that they might even have been in the lower half durring prelims and numbers 7 or 8. It was a shame to see Spain disappear that night. I still think she had the best body. Venezuela also had the body as well. It was a shame Spain stayed with that gown. Her people seemed to pay no attentiion to the fans and thier take on that God awful gown. Now as for India....

I truly believe although we did not see her at her best durring the interviews durring finals night, that durring her one on one prelim interviews she shot to number one in that specific category. Therefore, even with mediocre presentation prelim scores, with a very high prelim interview score I would have had her at number 5 on simple mathematics.

Israel I believe truly had the best face. I also believe her interview was very good as well. It would not have surprised me if she were more at the top of the list. Nor would it surprise me if she also took prelim interviews or placed way up there in that category. Russia I totally accept at 9 or ten and am still scratching my head over this one hitting top ten over some that did place in this alleged "real" top ten. Nigeria I believe was no higher than 7 if she was lucky. Pretty face but not surpassing those on that questionable top ten list. My guess is the following placement for prelim top ten scores: Puerto Rico, USA, Greece, Israel, Spain, India, Venezuela, Nigeria, France and Russia. By the way this was not at all my top ten guess before the actual call. This is how I see the numbers adding up. Looks is one thing but a very poor or rather good interview I believed sealed the fate of many who either made it or not. This is why USA, Greece and Puerto Rico remained from beginning to end numbers one through 3. They were by far the most consistant in all 3. Even USA with her stumbles was still heads above the rest. This was not just about the look. You've got to have some verbal skills as well. Anyway, on to those that missed the call and thier alleged ranking. I found those past the number 10 spot to be highly questionable.

Numbers 11,12,13 I could almost accept without snickering too much. Antigua, and South Africa I do believe were right up there and in many ways it is a shame they didn't hit. I personally think both of these 2 could have made things real interesting on finals night. Now as for Nicaragua being right up there I just don't see it. However, if someone wants to say she was number 11, well thats ok, but this is one placement I would have to see the actual numbers and have Mr. Trump stand behind it and say it was true. No matter if you liked the actual top ten or not one thing that was obvious is that the prelim judges played it right down the line. Actually all of the eventual real ten were mentioned at one point or another as a possible top ten entrant. Thus we can conclude without numbers that for the most part we can guess who the top overall 40 would be. The mentioned number 11 I just don't see based on how obvious the prelim judges voted. She was one of the more sweeter one's so perhaps saying she had this position when she really didn't is acceptable.

Mexico and Philippines did about as well as I thought they both would. Interesting how it is suggested on a Brazilian website that Brazil faired better than both of these lady's. Sorry guys love your website but I don't believe this as well. Brazil destroyed her chances and in a big way. I truly believe she was penalized for her lack in self respect in all those surgeries and then trying to convince the public in general it was ok to basically shed yourself of how God had created you and create an much imporved, FAKE version of outter beauty. This is the one area the organization hates talking about and is clear about it's approach. I doubt she was even in top 40.

Mexico was a spitfire of energy and sexiness on the runway and I do not see Brazil overtaking her in all three categorys. Philippines did exactly how I predicted she would do. I would believe this placement or round about in that area for her. Her physical transformation in such a short time was uncanny! However, she was still tiny little cute Zora who had a lot of formadible competition to beat in order to hit top ten. Be proud Philippines she showed great confidence in an incredible field of beauty's. Now the big one that I don't believe at all and definitely need to see the scores and have Mr. Trump stand behind the placement of Colombia at number 21.

It was noted that "The Donald" even made a jackass out of himself when he asked the newly crowned Miss Universe if she thought Miss Colombia was stunning. This tells you that even the president of this Organization saw her as a physical standout. That body was just too good in both swimsuit and gown to not get the higher scores. The only thing I believe that stoped her from a top ten call was a mediocre interview which I predicted would be her enemy and her impassioned fan's promised she would come through in that area. I truly believe this candidate was the true number 11 with South Africa next and then Antigua. Once again the prelim judges were to right down the line with scoring to believe this low of a placement for such a stunning woman.

Overall impression of this placement report is very skeptical. I say this with no bias for one candidate over another. Look at these questionable results as entertainment. I'm sure It will make some real overly obsessed fans happy or pissed. Please Don't take it personally.

I think unless the organization themselves are willing to stand behind prelim placements it is best to not consider a "reliable source who wants to be anonymous" to be the bearer of the real placements. It would be best to have Mr. Trump deliver them himself with his signiture authenticating the results with actual scores not placement numbers.

Venezuela - Honey/Querida, you're no Claudia Moreno

India - Why do the same countries make it every year?

Russia - What the ?%^@*!?????

USA - At least she was better than Kimberly Pressler

France - Gotta love that right arm

Puerto Rico - Yeah, it was fixed to some degree, but at least she wasn't Joyce "Best" Giraud

HOT COMMENTS -- MUST READ, 18:54:22 05/27/01 Sun

Congrats to France , Spain , India , Venezuela , and USA for making Top 10 two years in a row ! The victory is especially sweet for France ! Who would have ever thought France from all those years would make top 10 years in a row . Spain also is becoming a tough competitor kind of nation (I like to think of Spain as the Michigan of UNiverse , for those of you following the national state pageants recently know what I mean )
Is it just me or does Venezuela have one TO many runner up positions . Especially in recent years . By last year , I was getting adjusted to the idea of Venezuela getting 1st runner up . But since , what ? 93'...94' Venezuela either was 1st;2nd or 3rd runner up (with the exception of 96' of course) which makes me come to the conclusion that judges tend to like Venezuelan beauties , however they cant reward them the crown because it's the "close but no cigar" concept (which is my favorite saying !).
Spain , A.K.A ~ first delegate to always get called into Top 10 .
Also , nice to see USA back in action . As one previous message poster commented that for some bizzare reason USA could never go further then Top 5 in the 90's (with the exception of 95' & 97') and come to think of it , USA did not have that many wins this past decade . Looks as if Kandace got this nation back on the map .
Hard to believe that Venezuela and Puerto Rico are TIED , yes folks the two latin nations are tied with the second most ever Miss Universe wins , behind USA.
Celina deserves alittle more credited then awarded to her for the reason being that , besides Lara , India doesnt usually advance in Top 5 , taking in consideration recent years .
I noticed that there's always that one , or in some cases two or even three , but generally one African nation in Top 10 .(this year being Nigeria)
I also thought to myself what would happen if Evelina competed for the title of her national title last year , and competed for the international title in a more friendly enviroment to her (Cyprus) ?
Asian delegates need to shape up .It seems most Asian franchise holders are telling their delegates that they are going to a 3 week circus/playground , when infact they need to start thinking of Miss Universe as a competition . The reason that Asian nations have not been doing so well in recent years is because they have brought it upon themselves .
Very , very VERY nice to see Isreal in the Top 10 . With the nations many defeats , it is nice to have this . For those in touch with current events , I'm sure you saw the video clip of a wedding in progress in the building that collapsed in Isreal, on your local news ? If not , you dont want to because it is such a SAD SAD picture , my heart collapsed aswell . However , dispite all this turmoil in this nation , it's nice to see even the smallest change with a Top 10 spot . Also , nice to see Isreal back in the game like the 70's. Isreal IS the most competitive middle eastern nation in Miss Universe. Now here's to put things in prespective :
* Nation's losing their competitive (once had) touch :
Mexico - Phillipines - Sweeden - Colombia - Trinidad & TB.

* Nation's gaining respect , becoming competitive ,and sending some great delegates in recent year's are :
Spain! - South Africa - France - Russia

*Nations that have defanitly been getting overlooked :
Panama (they make top 15 alot) - Czech Republic - Ireland - Sweden - Lebanon - Egypt! - Aruba!
The 4 , yes there's only four TRUE "Power Houses" are :
Venezuela , USA , India and Puerto Rico . Interesting that ALL four advanced to Top 5 this year . In 1997 all four made Top 10 ; 98' all 4 Top 10 , 3 Top 5 ; I would say 1999 was a very weak year for the power house nations , as 3 made Top 10 , but out of those three only one went on to Top 5 , and that one being Venezuela did not even make Top 3 . 2000 was good as 3 made Top 5 , 2 made Top 2/3 and one won ! and this year ofcourse was a GREAT year for the magnifacent four as all four made Top 5 , and one won again . These four nations all deserve every ounce of success handed to them! Here's how they did between themselves: Inorder from placment , from best to worse in past five years: 97'- USA- Venezuela - Puerto Rico - India.
98'- Venezuela - Puerto Rico- USA - India .
99'- Venezuela- India - Puerto Rico- USA .
2000- India - Venezuela - USA - Puerto Rico .
2001- Puerto Rico - USA - Venezuela - India.
Overall , best power house nation to fourth best:
*Winner: VENEZUELA - 1st runnerup: USA - 2nd: PUERTO RICO and 3rd :INDIA.

Evelina and Denise tied!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -- Uni Org, 18:17:33 05/24/01 Thu

I just got off from talking to a friend who was lucky enough to attend both the pageant and the coronation ball. She was able to ask for the autographs of the two “supermodel” judges, Veronica Webb and Mini Anden. She casually asked them who they voted for and both of them said GREECE.

Later, she and a group of friends were able to chat with an Ernst & Young accountant (but not the famous Mark Ward) and he said that PUERTO RICO and GREECE actually TIED during the final vote. He told them that Dayanara Torres, Marc Anthony, Richard Johnson and Tyson Beckford voted for Denise while Mini Anden, Marc Bouwer, Veronica Webb and Kel Gleason all went for Denise. Interestingly, all the Puerto Rico votes came at the RIGHT side of the panel while the Greece votes were at the LEFT side. It was almost like there was a judging faction.

Now according to the rules given to them, the delegate who scored highest during the semifinal round would win and in this case, it was Denise. He also told them that INDIA was pretty much unanimous for fifth while there was also a tight battle for third between USA and VENEZUELA but there was no tie between them.

I remember a similar thing being reported before when Wendy and Veruska apparently tied in 1998. As a tiebreaker, the scores during the Top 5 round was used and Wendy won. This year, however, the Top 5 round was NOT scored so they used the Top 10 round scores.

Now, can anyone verify this? Before anyone jumps to conclusions, I’d like to point out that this just came from an accountant’s mouth. But then again, why would he lie? He told them that the results were NOT confidential as it can be requested for by the pageant directors. So I’d like to ask anyone there if this is true.

If it’s true, then I’d say it was such a shame that there wasn’t a cut to 3. I think GREECE would’ve outscored PUERTO RICO during the Top 5 round had it been scored. But that’s the way the pageant went so we’ll just have to wait another year to do this all over again.

But my question is, why doesn’t the Miss Universe Org. just have an ODD numbered panel of judges? This would solve a lot of problems.

Celina's 5 minutes interview with Femina -- Voojura, 18:04:57 05/24/01 Thu

EVERY morning, I see the sun rise in a different city — that’s how much my life has changed since the win,” sighs Femina Miss India- Universe 2001 Celina Jaitly, as she prepares to face the cameras in her first stint as a VJ for MTV. “It’s been a whirlwind existence, what with all the relief work, photo shoots, press conferences and public appearances. But I’m loving every mo-ment of it.” The best part of it all, she says, is actually being Miss India. “Over-night, you’re this public figure with so much attention, so much access to people and places, so much responsibility. It’s just amazing!”

But with all the limelight comes the downside of being a public figure too. “I haven’t seen my brother for 10 months and haven’t spent any time with my family for almost as long... Sometimes,” she says, a little sadly, “I feel like a little girl — quite lost amidst all that is happening around me. But when I think of actually winning, I realise how much it means to me and to my family, and every bit seems totally worth it.”

GOING FOR THE WIN

Amid the madness, Celina stays amazingly calm and focused — a quality that obviously stood her in good stead n the final round of the Femina Miss India contest. “I’m not nervous at all; I’m not the type — or maybe it’s just that I’ve been too busy to feel anything,” she laughs.

Celina is very clear about where she’s headed. “Training for the international pageant is very different from training for the national one. At the national pageant, you know exactly what to expect — you’re competing with other Indians with whom you share a certain common heritage and background. Whereas in the international pageant, you simply don’t know what to expect from the other contestants, especially since they belong to such culturally diverse climates.” That’s why Celina says she’s concentrating so much on understanding Indian culture. “In effect, you become an ambassador for your country out there, and how much of it you really understand is what will make you stand out.” It is also about how well you express yourself. Which is why Celina is taking her diction and speech classes with Sabira Merchant very seriously, and is also working on the question and answer session with her father. “We received the bulk of our training for the Femina Miss India contest; what remains is merely to add the finishing touches — keeping the global angle in mind.”

So while Celina will be back at the gym with Talwalkars for an hour every morning, this time she’ll be working out with weights to add some definition to her already well-toned body. “I’ve also been visiting Dr Jamuna Pai for weekly sessions for my face and skin.” Apart from that, there’s a regimented diet set out for her by Dr Anjali Mukherjee, a perfected hair care programme by Dr Apoorva Shah and a styling and make-up routine with Bharat and Doris Godambe and the fun part — setting up a whole new designer wardrobe with ace craftsmen Hemant Trevedi for the Sheetal Design Studio and Ritu Kumar.

So now though it’s back to the gym and the hectic training sessions; this time round the schedules are more measured, Celina’s efforts are more precise and she’s even more determined to achieve that perfection, that finesse and that final je ne sais quoi, that have always been the mark of a winner.

My sentiments -- Brnd, 19:15:19 05/22/01 Tue

First of all, I do appreciate Ms Uni organization for trying out something 'hippy' & refreshing even though most of us preferred the original style. The opening introduction was alright at least National costumes were worn and shown but I would love if they could say their names as well. Why not?

The swimwear round was sexy and sooooo supermodel-liked. I love the music they used but many interuptions thru-out. I understand that they might wanna be different and special...two delegates then commercial etc but it's just too long-winded.

The Evening Gown's music is great. Very 'Victoria Secret'. The gowns were alright. That's more presentable and nicer to watch.

Here comes the top 5...there's no meaning to it when they had to answer the top 5 questions then the final night's question...how's the scores to be? what evidence do we get to prove that Greeceis worth being 2nd and not 1st? Why Venezuela is 4th? so unbelievable!?

Comments on the ten:

Spain-Hair wasn't best kept though I like her alot. Her eyes seemed rather small for her look that night. She did quite okay but her walking seemed alittle dull and tired. Loved her skin colour and her gown!

Venezuela-To be honest, I hated her from the first day but she changed my mind. She's such a modern woman. Upfront and fast. She acts well and walks well. She deserves a higher spot than 4th!? Great gown great swimsuit. Fake or not, it doesn't matter anymore...no one is so real I guess.

Nigeria-This gal was great the press said abt her and her pics were nice. That night, she's too thinny and she can't even walk well. God! I seriously think the blacks this year didn't do well. They have good hearts though. South Africa should replace her.

Israel-She's rather unique.Seeing her with straight hair and her country making th eten was actually refreshing. She's simple and sexy.Quite Jennifer Lopez though. Her gown didn't flatter her much.

Greece-A gal to win the crown hands down. How smart or bimboo who cares. she just needed the body and walk to bring her to the level two of the competition. She answered genuinely and was well understood. She hated politics and there she was..save and sound. She did well...really great in swimsuit! Best ever. Her breasts were more natural looking than Eva Ekvall's of course. She has great gown and she deserves to win.

India- So boring...though I'm an Asian.I love Philippines and Korea to replace her. She's too short and her body suxs. Sorry to the Indians. Look at the body in bikini..so much oil and so thick and small..yeeekkk.Her evening gown like what!? Pulling and dragging..change to a simpler gown and stop that sari look! It's outdated for gowns in that 'fuchia' colour! She's the worst delegate I've seen from India. She should be in the top 20...her English was bad too. So rehearsed..for the inner self motivating factor..etc. Her last question was so typical too...about her bed-ridden thing...god!Spain should have been in the 5.

Russia-Oh my lord...this girl is nice but she's sulked thru out the night after being knocked out. She's not that good and her gown is so out of fashion. Is she a dracula? She's so flat chested..I wonder how she could do well in swimsuit segment!? Colombia has better better body than her!? Blind judges!

USA-She's a mother isn't she? Seemed nice to me but she doesn't have the top 10 calibre. She's such a waste to bein the top 3 and top 10!! Canada or Colombia should be in the list...com-on USA need not be in the top 10 each every year it's so unfair whether u organize or not right? There's no sense of achievement.Love her skin colour and her walking style is so trained by Lynette Cole! Yucks!

France- I love this gal. She's such a dove. She's fair, blonde and sweet.I just dun get it why she didn't walk well. Her 'wooden-arm' is so unsightful. Why walked till one arm seemed to be in ache or pain!? She could have easily make the top5...than India or USA!? Sad man.

Puerto Rico-I used to like her but during the contest..I changed my mind. She's so supported and the judges were so dull over the scoring system. How could she top the swimwear segment? Fair and flabby alittle...Greece should be top of not Venezuela,Spain or USA! Biased that's when I started losing interest in her. Gown was great she walked well but hated her pose..so typical, so rehearsed and so exact the smile and the turns....seemed like she knew the questions, the moves the time to smile to charm the people.

My opinion for top 5 ranking:
5th-France (if only her wooden arm was gone)
4th-Spain (if only she showed more interest in her moves)
3rd-Puerto Rico (hot fav tends to end runner-ups)
2nd-Venezuela(deserves that level though sick of them winning)
1st-Greece (refreshment for 2000)

Denise's message to our youth! -- Ben, 22:21:54 05/21/01 Mon

PRIMERA HORA > PANORAMA

miss universo 2001 -- peter, 19:59:25 05/20/01 Sun

'I DIDNT WIN COZ IT NOT MY TURN!' -- EVA's BAD, 19:16:28 05/19/01 Sat

Here's my translation of Eva Ekvall's interview in El Mundo. She sounds very bitter - which is understandable. She thinks that Donald Trump is giving the pageant a bad name. Whatever we may think, Eva is still a beautiful and intelligent young woman who has great things ahead of her. Since she's interested in environmental issues, maybe Osmel should send her to Miss Earth pageant in Manila to be held on Nov. 14th. Maybe she'll win!

EVA EKVALL: "I DIDN’T WIN BECAUSE IT WASN’T MY TURN.”
Daniel Uzcátegui

http://www.elmundo.com.ve/ediciones/2001/05/18/f-mun.asp?pv=p1-17.htm&st=p1-17s5.htm

“I don’t feel frustrated. I’ve thought about it and even though I am not happy with my placement in the pageant, it is not important. I don’t need a crown to prove that I did well or to be a better person. I feel I am Miss Universe and that’s it.”

That’s how our conversation with Eva Ekvall started. Our Miss Venezuela and third runner-up in the Miss Universe pageant paid a visit to Channel Capiles.

Eva appears serene and peaceful. She doesn’t doubt that she did an extraordinary job in Puerto where the contest took place and won by Denise Quinones, the hometown girl.

“It’s the first time that nobody can say that the Venezuelan lost because, even though she was beautiful, she didn’t speak English or she was half-stupid. I proved that I was a complete woman. I didn’t win because it simply wasn’t my turn.”

Dressed in blue, always smiling despite the sadness and wearing the sash that says she is the most beautiful woman in Venezuela, the tall 18-year old Caracas beauty stated that after learning the results of the pageant, she became very distraught. She decided not to attend the coronation ball because she didn’t want anybody to know that her pride was hurt.

“Ever since I arrived in Puerto Rico, I was the favorite to win and everybody treated me very well. But during the finals, it changed a little and it was getting more obvious that the fight for the crown was going to be between Denise and me. During the coronation night, when they called me as the third runner-up – something that I never heard before – the coliseum collapsed. Everybody knew that their candidate had won, that her best rival Venezuela – well, there were at least 80 women and you’re competing with only 15 and all the others were just pure filling - she was already out. But the worst happened at the exit where people were insulting me and making rude gestures with their hands. I felt destroyed by that, and that’s why I didn’t go to the party. I was very hurt.”

Concerning the finalists, Eva Ekvall has her reservations. She reviewed her performance and noticed that nobody performed better than she had. “Suddenly, they found something in them that I didn’t have.”

- Do you feel like a victim of injustice?

“Not so much like that. There’s too much hunger in this world. That’s injustice. There are thousands of innocent people who are killed every day. That’s injustice. I think there are things more important than winning a pageant.”

She deserved to win, but it didn’t happen and the chapter is closed.

- Do you think you made a mistake in something?

“No! I was always calm and I performed consistently.”

“I liked my performance, my answer, my overall participation. I stood up for my country and everyone noticed that – the people on the street, my friends, my family and everyone in the organization.”

- Did Irene Saez and Barbara Palacios support you in Puerto Rico?

“Yes. I spoke with Barbara before the coronation and she gave me a lot of advice. I spoke with Irene after the pageant. She was furious with the results, and rightfully so. Too bad for the Miss Universe Organization. It’s losing its credibility in the same way as Donald Trump whom nobody respects anymore.”

- What follows next?

“Complete my reign as Miss Venezuela, relinquish my crown, and see if I could be a spokesperson for a pro-environment company. Then, I want to study languages so I could continue nurturing my mind. What I don’t want to do is to be an actress. It just doesn’t appeal to me. If I were to do soap operas, it would only be possible if I they made me choose between a prostitute and an actress. I would choose actress and the rest would be no laughing matter.”

Greece to Feel Read Low -- Sad Gerl, 19:11:50 05/19/01 Sat

After having read most of the posts here, I can understand why many people feel that Miss Greece was robbed of the crown. In pageant history, whenever a candidate "freezes" during the final question it's indicative of her victory or not. Honestly, I also felt that Miss PR's "pause" should've stripped her of the crown and Miss Greece (breathtaking in all aspects) should've won the Miss Universe crown.

I can imagine Miss Greece's disappointment at not winning the crown (althought 1ST RU is also a great accomplishment), but I hope that she finds comfort in knowing that many people believe she IS the one that deserves the title of Miss Universe 2001. You're simply fabulous Evelina!!!
