Against the Light

Part 1 of 3

On this day, an idea came to me that I have to write a book on the basics of photography after interviewing my officemate, Benjamin Espartero who was once working on projects with Nick Joaquin when the latter was still alive.

For projects that deal with population, I worked with Benjie for about two (2) years and we travelled to Baguio, Banaue, Iloilo, Butuan, Davao just to name a few, to come up with a documentary on the interrelationships between and among population, health and environment.

I have to show you one (1) video. Benjie did all the pictorials and video on this while I assisted him on the latter. In this video also, I did the narration--a hobby and a skill perhaps, which I used to do even during my college years. Listen to this now before I give you the lessons or write down the lessons on photography and painting by way of having interviews (including interviewing myself) with both Benjie and myself (quite funny for one to interview himself or himself):

About Photography:

Me: How long does a camera battery life last?
Benjie: It lasts for about 3 to 4 hours.
(You need to bring a charger with you when you take shots, or have at least 3 battery reserves so you will always be ready for the shooting or taking of pictures.).

Me: How to you care for the camera?
Benjie: You have to protect the lens by covering it with cap.
(You must treat it like a weapon of a soldier.).

Me: What is the battery type that you use for the camera?
Benjie: Lithium
(The battery supply is 9.5 volts. Recently, there’s a camera that is connected to the alternating current (household wiring) but it’s more handy if you just take your camera with you with the battery in-place so it won’t affect your mobility. The electric wire can cause hassles when you take pictures.).

Me: How much light do you provide for the subject before taking pictures?
Benjie: It depends.
(When there is enough light, you have to provide or allow a little light entry to your camera. You have to take note of the shadows and try to eliminate it by providing light to the shadowy portion of the subject (in case of taking ID pictures) so the neck won’t appear black while taking the shot. The reflector, the flash or any form of light that will eliminate the shadow usually provide help by lighting the shadowed portion to eliminate the unnecessary dark color that is marked on the skin because when that shadow is stricken by light, it will be eliminated and you can successfully take pictures of your subject.).

Note : This book 'Against the Light' is Benjamin Espartero and Carlo Soldevilla’s book about photography and painting. This book can sooner be purchased at the Jewish Art Gallery located in Dela Paz Village, Tarlac City at a reasonable price. The gallery is open 24/7 and since the gallery is usually unmanned, an instruction will be written on the gallery wall on how to purchase an electronic copy of ‘Against the Light’ on-line. You will also find in the gallery the watercolor paintings of mine (just posted or pasted on the gallery walls and ceilings). I do paint at the back of scratch papers. I did intend that the gallery will always be open 24/7 so the children can go anytime inside the house to see the paintings. Sometime later, the photos of Benjie will also be posted on the gallery walls.
