In the afternoon, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke will deliver the first of four lectures at George Washington University on the history of the central bank, continuing his effort to shed further light on the workings of the Fed at a time where both he and the Fed are under political attack. “With the election season, Bernanke-bashing is in season now,” said Pepper, who adds most people don’t realize the Fed “made a tidy sum” for taxpayers in its purchases of mortgage-backed bonds and other programs. “What he’s doing is a little more difficult for the average person to understand, but unemployment rates are going down, and we didn’t have a massive collapse of all our banks. History will show Ben Bernanke did a good job,” said Pepper. /quotes/zigman/627449 Add to portfolio DJIA Dow Jones Industrial Average 13,173.02 -66.11 -0.50% Volume: 59.58mMarch 20, 2012 12:21p /quotes/zigman/221644/quotes/nls/cat Add to portfolio CAT Caterpillar Inc. $ 110.94 -2.80 -2.46% Volume: 4.72mMarch 20, 2012 12:21p /quotes/zigman/245568/quotes/nls/dis Add to portfolio DIS Walt Disney Co. $ 43.24 -0.20 -0.46% Volume: 2.87mMarch 20, 2012 12:21p /quotes/zigman/242371/quotes/nls/lgf Add to portfolio LGF Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. $ 14.71 +0.46 +3.22% Volume: 3.77mMarch 20, 2012 12:21p /quotes/zigman/190927/quotes/nls/bac Add to portfolio BAC Bank of America Corp. $ 9.77 +0.24 +2.50% Volume: 267.33mMarch 20, 2012 12:22p /quotes/zigman/3870025 Add to portfolio SPX S&P 500 Index 1,402.90 -6.85 -0.49% Volume: 224.96mMarch 20, 2012 12:21p /quotes/zigman/123127 Add to portfolio COMP NASDAQ Composite Index 3,056.73 -21.59 -0.70% Volume: 0.00March 20, 2012 12:21p /quotes/zigman/2203138 Add to portfolio CLJ2 Crude Oil - Electronic (NYMEX) Apr 2012 $ 106.33 -1.76 -1.63% Volume: 17,740March 20, 2012 12:10p /quotes/zigman/270355/quotes/nls/bhp Add to portfolio BHP BHP Billiton Ltd.
