I can't shed any light on the specifics of patrol usage, but as a long time pickup owner, the benefits can be great. If I were buying with the usage and future outlook you have mentioned, I would choose a true 4-door one half ton model. The three-quarter ton and larger are somewhat sturdier, but handling and ride can suffer. With the 4-door, a cage can be installed by your motor pool and when the rear seat is folded, it is the ultimate K-9 carrier. The lower line models have rubber flooring and wiht the upright rear window, considerable gear can be stored inside. Aftermarket stuff for tiedowns and bed modification is quite cheap and can be tailored to the dept. needs. I would choose either a GMC or Chevrolet with the 5.3 V8 and the 4-door should cost about what a Ford PI does. If you are getting a 2WD, the limited slip rear axle is a MUST as these things are so light the traction is nil. I have a GMC Sierra 2WD V6 and the handling is on a par with most 80's sedans and cruises fine at 85 and handles goos to about 105. 17 mpg city and 20 highway. Ford is redsigning for 2004 and Dodge looks great but really comes up short in the gas engine models. Probably best to just go drive some. In my town we have CVs for patrol and 2 4-door explorers, 2 4WD tahoes and 3 Excursions (they are just too ponderous) The guys like the Tahoes best. Those explorer sized SUVs are just too cramped for police work. Stick with the pick-ups and save about $10 grand too.
