Horsepower ratings pre-1972 were mostly false! They were never actually rated VIA the rear wheels... they were calculated ie: 50 horsepower through the driveline... yet name 1 vehicle where you only lose 50 horse through the driveline...

ANY rear wheel drive car will lose 100 horse to the wheels EASILY! through the driveline. Just ask any Dyno-man. And just have a look in the car mag's today, at flywheel horse to wheel horse, and notice the huge loss.

As for finding the CORRECT specs for the Fords, is almost impossible, Ford had made some mis-interpretations, to get past some emissions and insurance problems back in the day, I personally would rate my 78 to the wheels at 270 Horse... and with the fresh re-build, i'm lookin for close to 300 (with some minor mods).

I just recently drove a Lincoln with the 460 4V, and there was absolutly no comparison with power to my 460 PI! YET the books say 5 horse diff! YAWN... NOT

BUT lookin forward to hearin back from the pro's who have it apart right now, and gettin me the TRUE specs... they already told me the heads are in great shape, and definitly performance heads! and RARE.

As for the timeslip.. I'm sorry I never kept my timeslip from the track (as I thought I'd be there again) until the Bearing grenaded on me a few years ago...

But I ran a 15.4 on street tires, and only made 1 pass. I'm sure I could get 14's out of her..

I guess I should add, that I spoke to a guy at a truckstop in Wisconsin who has a 1971 Ford 429 PI & a 78 460 PI (no not Mr.Parks) and he told me the 71 was a lil quicker than the 78, but hardly noticeable... go figure, compared to the books who claim almost 200 horse more for the 71.... ill let you figure out the rest......

Chris
