Subject: OT, the space shuttle
I could hardly believe that there was another explosion of a space shuttle. My prayers go out to the family and friends of the crew. I hope NASA can determine exactly what happened so there will never be another tragedy such as this again. I've heard some speculation that it somehow involved the tiles, but that was only speculation.

Re: OT, the space shuttle/We heard the explosion -- Cindy C, 11:11:53 02/02/03 Sun
My Husband and I were having coffee in our living room and watching the weekend "Today Show", when we heard a boom, that rumbled. At first we just looked at each other, and I immediately thought that our son had slipped in the shower, and I ran back to ask him if he was ok, and he hadn't a clue to what I was talking about. Then I realized I could still hear the sound. We didn't think a whole lot about it , until around 10 minutes or so later, it came across the television that they had lost contact with the shuttle. Then, just 10 minutes after that, I would say, they had showed footage of it exploding over North Central Texas, Dallas, to be specific, was named. We live 47 miles Southwest of Dallas. It was then, that we realized that the Boom we had heard was the Shuttle Columbia exploding. If we would have went outside, we would have seen it in the sky, but we had no idea that they were to land yesterday. I am sure all of you have seen the footage on Television about the path of the Debris that has fallen. They have found debris in the next county over from us, in a town Called Waxahachie, Tx, which is only 20 miles from us. The path extends all the way down to the Piney Woods of east Texas and into Louisiana. Our Good Friend Kellie Smith lives out in the Piney Woods, and I am wondering what she has heard about anything in her area.
I am deeply saddened by this tragedy, as all of America is, and My heart and prayers go out to the families of the Astronauts. May God Bless them all.

Re: News from Kellie re: the Columbia -- Kim, 18:58:47 02/03/03 Mon
I spoke with Kellie on the phone this morning and she told me about how on Saturday morning, she was getting ready to head out for the day, and her hubby was reading the paper I think she said. All of a sudden there was a colossal BOOM and they actually thought someone's house (or possibly an oil well) had exploded off the face of the earth. They both ran outside but couldn't see anything unusual going on. They had no radio or TV on and so it wasn't until she was at someone else's home fifteen minutes later that she found out that the shuttle had exploded. She said she wasn't really excited at that point to be driving down one of the highways, just in case debris was still falling to the ground!
In any case, she is doing just fine (Hong Kong flu notwithstanding!) and did not suffer a direct hit from Columbia. I told her that while watching a US affiliate's coverage on one of our Canadian TV stations, the American newsman was having a hard time pronouncing where debris had been found, Nacogdoches. "And in Naca, Nacadi ...ahem, in Eastern Texas debris from Columbia has been located." She got a kick out of that.

Re: News from Kellie re: the Columbia /Kim and Jennifer -- Cindy C, 21:10:19 02/03/03 Mon
Thanks Jennifer, for including me in your thoughts on Saturday. I appreciate that! We have learned last night that we have debris about 15 miles up the road from us, and I think in my other post I had told all of you about another spot that is 20 miles away..., and they were to close the schools there and in a few other districts until the debris was secured, but they feel that there is no contamination, which is a great relief. Kim, Thanks to you too for updating us on Kellie! I have been thinking of her a lot the last several days, and I know she isn't on much, although every now and then I get a nice email from her. From what I understand..there is a lot of debris down in her neck of the woods, and I am shocked too, tho, that she actually heard the boom. I guess the shuttle was still exploding once it got to her area, but I guess that is because that the distance from where I am, although a couple of hundred miles to where Kellie is..is just a minute or so in time, as fast as the shuttle goes. Gosh, I hope you can understand what I just said, because that was a hard sentence to write! LOL. It is sad to hear about them finding body parts now.. so hard to even fathom that they also fell to the earth. This is just so tragic.

Re: OT, the space shuttle/We heard the explosion -- Pat, 23:56:53 02/03/03 Mon
It is so hard to believe that this really happened. Someone told me today that they were in a little town near where we live in Southwest Louisiana and it seemed quite foggy. She said she realized later that it was probably the shuttle cloud they talked about on the news. One of the weathermen from a local tv station was somewhere around Dallas to tape the shuttle. He is from that area. He got the explosion on tape. He was recounting what he saw on this evening's news.

Re: OT, the space shuttle -- Jennifer, 17:12:10 02/03/03 Mon
Cindy I was thinking about you, Kellie and my friend Rebecca in Dallas all weekend. Unfortunately I have been really sick and we had a funeral Friday for my Great Uncle and tons of relatives in town. So the short periods of time I was home I slept! I am calling Kellie today when I get home from work (although Garrett pointed out that if something had happened she would have called, which prompted ME to point out that if a piece fell on her house she would NOT be able to call!) Our newspaper showed the debris path and her town is in that area! I am glad you are okay and safe. I feel so bad for the families. I know it is a risk they are all WELL aware of when going in the shuttle but still... This one has taken many flights. God Bless everyone.

Another update from Kellie -- Jennifer, 10:02:57 02/04/03 Tue
Yesterday Kellie had said that debris has been found as close as 3 miles from her house now. That is amazing to me! She also said that her uncle was watching the shuttle through a telescope and was on the phone with a buddy. Well, all of a sudden he told the guy, "I think it exploded!" and the guy, of course, thought he was joking. And Cindy, when she had said she heard it too all I could think was that due to both the speed and the distance from earth there must be quite a large radius of people who could hear it!

Re: Another update from Kellie -- Ann, 11:22:52 02/05/03 Wed
I'm amazed that no one on the ground was injured by falling debris! I saw one thing on TV where some pieces of the shuttle had gone through the roof of an office and landed right where someone would have been sitting if the office had been open. Yikes!

Re: Another update from Kellie -- Cindy C, 12:17:25 02/05/03 Wed
Yes Ann, I have been thinking of that also. I am so amazed too, at the wide path that the debris has fallen. It just seems so unreal how long the debris stayed in the air, and how far it spread. I was looking at the radar on Saturday, and was just in Awe of the long line that was showing up. I liked President Bush's speech on Saturday, where he was saying that "The Astonauts didn't return safely to earth, but we can all pray that they made it safely home".I also believe that the Good Lord was watching out for all of us below.
