Subject: Frontier House Book

I got the FH yesterday. It's 225 pages (and big pages, about 10 x 13), so obviously I have not read the whole thing, lol. I love it! It has lots of photos (boy, would I like *modern day* log home. All that wood is so beautiful.
The book includes what the families wrote in their applications. Very interesting. For example, Mr. Clune said a lot about the prospect of hunting to provide for his family. So now I can see why he was so ticked off when he wasnt' told until he was in the project and preparing to go to the homestead that he couldn't hunt.
Also, turns out Kristin Brooks is allergic to horses, so that is why Nate's father is there first, and then Kristin comes later to marry Nate. They needed the horses to get to the homestead and for hauling logs while building, but then they (The Brooks) didn't need the horses any more.
In addition to all the information about PBS preparing for the show, the families preparing for it, living it, reactions after, there are a lot of true-life stories about real frontier pioneers mixed in. I'll probably post more as I read more, but I just wanted to let everyone know that I think the book is a worthwhile buy if you are at all interested in the Frontier House experience.

I wish I could have watched the entire season (however short it was). I thought the series would last for months! You can imagine the shock.

I would love to read that book and any article, Jennifer.

DH threw away the TV Guide!!!! If anyone has last weeks that is where you can find it... In any case, it basically talked about FH and that Mark and Karen are now getting divorced and he is living in Montana in a cabin for a while writing a book.

I'm not surprised that Mark and Karen are getting a divorce. For all her whining about the Clunes whining, it seems that the Clunes survived better as a family. Of course, with it being a second marriage for both Mark and Karen, and a marriage of I think 4 years, as opposed to the Clunes 18 years, there was a difference to begin with.
I think Mark has a daughter from a first marriage, about whom he said in the show was the only person he really loved (Karen must have been thrilled to hear that). I wonder where she lives, if it is anywhere near Montana. If it's not, then I guess writing his book is more important to him than maintaining close contact with "the only person" he loves.

Is it just me (an please - I hope no one takes offense to this!!!!) but do people in second marriages just not give things a try? Do they not work as hard? And I don't mean ALL people because I am sure there are many people out there who DO. But most second marriages I hear about don't survive long. Seems to me as though many people today use divorce so readily.

I do know the divorce rates for second marriages are higher than for first marriages. I'm sure there are second marriages that are good and strong and lasting. But think of the "baggage" that is brought to a second marriage makes it more difficult--ex-spouses, ex-in-laws, blending families if there are kids. Some people do it beautifully, I'm sure, but it must be hard. For one thing, the kids may or may *not* be thrilled with having a step-parent and maybe step-siblings and the kids didn't fall in love with anyone, they are just along for the "ride" so, being kids, they probably make their feeling known in more ways than one!
