I'm sure there were times when Mary felt depressed, like things were unfair for her but probably for the most part she had an "things happen for a reason" or "God has a special purpose" kind of attitude.

As a young girl I was probably more like Mary (goody-two-shoes), but as I aged I think I became more like Laura, lol. I do remember in junior high thinking it was time I started speaking up, and I kept getting in trouble for talking in class. :)
Mary seemed so shy, and hesitant to go to town on 4th of July and that sort of thing. Though she may probably missed having the opportunity to become a teacher because of losing her eyesight, I wonder if she would have "made it" dealing with a school full of kids, especially some of the older rowdy boys.
