Hmmm. This is an interesting issue, and could be one that I explore in my dissertation (provided my title/ topic gets approved of course).

I would have thought that the soles would have been thick. I remember my grandmother always wearing a black pair of shoes that seemed like real leather, looking back on it... and the soles were thick.... now I was about 5 years old about this time , which would have put the year about 1964, but for some reason it seems that the thick soled shoes would have been more practical and of the times back in Lauras day.... but this is only a guess!
