I would have thought that the soles would have been thick. I remember my grandmother always wearing a black pair of shoes that seemed like real leather, looking back on it... and the soles were thick.... now I was about 5 years old about this time , which would have put the year about 1964, but for some reason it seems that the thick soled shoes would have been more practical and of the times back in Lauras day.... but this is only a guess!

Cindy, the ones I've seen have been in museums, so as I said those may have been dress shoes. My grandmother always wore thick-sole shoes too, but I'm remember her from the 1950's and 60's.
Laura, I hope your project gets approved. Whether you focus on shoes or some other clothing, it'll be fascinating to see what you find out, I'm sure!
