Cindy, the ones I've seen have been in museums, so as I said those may have been dress shoes. My grandmother always wore thick-sole shoes too, but I'm remember her from the 1950's and 60's.
Laura, I hope your project gets approved. Whether you focus on shoes or some other clothing, it'll be fascinating to see what you find out, I'm sure!

In THGY, when Laura is dressing in the brown poplin dress and Carrie watches, she talks about her high well polished buttoned shoes, so I gues they were maybe almost like little ankle boots?

In one or more of the Rose books, Rose talks about her brogans (sp?) with heavy soles, but who knows if Rose really wore shoes like that or if MacBride just said she did.

I have a couple of late 1890s Sears and Montgomery Ward cataogs and there sure only seems to be "dress" shoes for women. I wonder if Godeys Ladies Book mentioned footwear styles?

In THGY, Laura wrote that when she went home from the Brewster school, she pulled a pair of stockings on OVER her shoes to keep warmer. Doesn't seem like she could get them over heavy shoes unless the stockings were really stretchy or the shoes were pretty thin.

Mr. Edwards had a rubber coat and Mary and Laura had rubber headbands in LHoP. I wonder if there were also rubber soled shoes?

When will you know about your thesis topic, Laura? It sounds like it will be fascinating!

I have to submit my topic on Monday - I guess they'll let me know after that. I have to then do a formal proposal which has to be in in mid-March.
