This was a really bad game for 'gate. QB had a bad day, needed to do a lot of scrambling, made some bad passes and the receivers dropped a lot of balls. Why Colgate tried to run up the middle when UNH's defensive line clearly was stronger is beyond me. What does using three RB's do for productivity? Use Wilkens for short yardage and decide whether to use Russell of Holland. Let one of them get into the flow of the game. The fumble and missed pass in the end zone were heart breaking. Play calling is so predictable The scholarship era is off to a terrible start. Another QB deserves a shot. There is nothing to lose. Without some changes I can see a three win season.
And please, stop these night games. No fans show up.

I am more optimistic than most but there are some simple truths.
It's tough to be accurate throwing off that back foot. Doesn't matter how much you want the ball to go someplace if you're going backwards as you release the ball to go forward. Last drive had the most confident throws, though red zone was a mess for everybody.
Holland is in year two of gaining a yard more per carry than anybody else. Seems to make sense to give him the ball early and Wilkins late, when the D is tired.
D played very well in the second half. Held them to two field goals. UNH had 97 yards of offense in the second half. Four of their six drives were three and outs. Colgate's D played very well against Navy in the second half as well. Not sure how much this is the opposition taking their foot off the gas, but boy would it be good if those adjustments could be made before the second quarter instead of the second half.
A lot of the guys you would expect making plays on D--Diener with 14 tackles. Hardegree had a nice pick. He plays fast and tackles well. Great start to the season at a position that was a question mark.
On O, Colgate had drives to the UNH 22, 18, 14, 17, 35, and 9 without getting any points. Colgate also had two 50 or so yards plays called back
I honestly feel like this team could win out.
D should be very solid as long as they play second half D to start.
On O, play action had receivers open. Quazza is always open (because of his size). Just have to make the plays. Throw the ball, catch the ball, hold onto the ball and Colgate wins this game and a lot more this year. If Melville is the guy, that QB draw is a nice looking play.
Would imagine watching film is going to be watching missed opportunity after missed opportunity. Time for these guys to start making the most out of this year. Lots of games out there to be won.

Future, thank you...I am quick to pass judgment far too often and appreciate the optimism and reality check. Honestly, it is only b/c 'Gate is in my blood 24/7/365 and watching them struggle in any sport is emotionally difficult. You paint a much brighter, broader picture. Emotions are hard to check as the game is being played but the analysis afterward is a bit more comforting and revealing.
Hunt said last week that Sunday morning he felt better; perhaps he feels the same today after our loss.
The PL as a whole is struggling a bit with early season losses. The CAA continues to have our number once again.

Can't help but think that it took Fordham a few years of suffering during its transition to scholarships before it blew the rest of us out of the water. In two more years, perhaps the playing field will reveal the same results for the rest of the PL and we can finally beat UNH for the first (?) time.

UNH put their backup qb in
adjustments need to be made before the game is out of reach and the opponent is pulling starters off the field

Holy cow. I had no idea UNH pulled Goldrich. Between getting kicked off the internet a dozen times and learning entirely too much about Mark van Eeghen (couldn't he have been interviewed for all of halftime instead of all of the 3rd quarter?) I missed that. Goldrich had a three and out to start the second half and then was pulled.
I was going to say to '80 that the team Colgate had gained on was actually UNH--this game had the first meaningful 4th quarter in a long time. Feel a little differently about it if Goldrich was pulled and not put back in as opposed to hurt.

It's time to try Bret Mooney at QB. He's 6'4" and about 210 lbs. He was touted as a drop back pro-type QB who could throw the ball 60 yds. It's time for the WRs to run their routes - especially Quazza and Greenawalt - and let Mooney drop the ball into their hands downfield. This would open up the offense and give Wilkens and Holland some room.
BTW, I was thrown off the internet after the first quarter until the 4th. Guess I missed the Van Eeagan long interview but was able to see 'Gate actually look a bit better at the end of the game, or at least score. FWIW, The announcers need to be sure their mikes are plugged into electrical outlets, not the wind turbines. Onward to Yale!

Thanks Mr. Mooney. I think he "looks" like a QB but Jake is quite good at all but one part of his job. Dropping back and putting the ball on target for more than an 8 yard in or out. And please stop with the bubble and flat passes, he just cannot do those.
Overall, Russell is a great runner but needs to stop with the dropsies. And get the usually reliable wide receivers some better stick 'em.
Defense hung in there all day against UNH after being demoralized against Navy. Tough go against Yale and then 3 straight wins against Holy Cross, Cornell, Princeton and Georgetown will have us at 4-3 or 5-2 and then the fun starts.
Quite worried that we end 2-2 at best (loss to Fordham and one of the 3 losses to LU, LC and Bucknell). That means we went 6-5 overall and 4-2 in conference, which is a very mediocre year kind of like kissing your sister.
Hope the guys step up and go 'gate.

They gave up OVER 300 yards in the FIRST half and UNH put their backup QB in for the 2nd half...c'mon !!!

Yesterday's game, ALL things considered including dismal attendance and zero students, is just another reason to never have another 6 PM game.

Got that right. The night games have been terrible for fan attendance. After the 1st half the stands were almost empty except for some parents. If there must be late games, start them at 4.

Weather or starting time? Weather is irrelevant for a 6 PM contest, IMHO. It simply is! The few students who attend, and fans in general, are much more likely to make a 1 PM game. I've been at the few we've had and I've had enough.

In the last 10 years UHN has averaged 9.3 wins, been in the playoffs all 10 years, with 10 playoff wins. Colgate has averaged 6.6 wins, has 4 losing seasons, and a playoff record of 0-3. Excluding the 8 year Foley/Sweeney era at the height of the gutting, we are at risk for having a losing season for the 3rd year in a row for the first time since the 1950s.
To answer gate's question, we beat UNH the first time we played them in 1986 on the road. And it was during only the 2nd losing season of the Dunlap era, when the effects of the gutting were starting to be felt. UNH was a penciled in win then, now they're a stretch game.
Didn't the horrible forecast and rain keep the attendance down? For those who need to stay overnight to go to a home game, an early season night game helps (I was planning to go until I heard the forecast). I realize there may not be many like me anymore. Perhaps a 4 pm start is a nice compromise.

folks, we are recruiting QBs that run as well as pass and I frankly doubt anybody on the squad will be better than Melville...if you are committed to the read option you recruit QBs that fit into that system...and not to be cruel, but Mooney didn't show much last year...we've got to rethink our entire approach on offense fairly soon and get some QBs with decent arms and pocket presence...the defense looks better...the offense is boring, predictable and not effective...
