ok, this is a conversation i had with a friend of mine today, not more than 5 minutes ago. well, an excerpt, anyway. before you completely disregard it because it's so long, and before you write it off as something really stupid, please read through and take it to heart. and a note: the names in here have been changed for confidentiality.

Satan’s Footman: yeah, but according to the Bible I would be one the footmen in Satan's ranks.

Satan’s Footman: I think that Christianity and all of it's foundings are the root of all evil that now plagues man kind. I think that it started out being a good idea

Satan’s Footman: well, humans have the same instincts as other animals.
Satan’s Footman: but we are different
Satan’s Footman: we have opposable thumbs, we walk upright, we have advanced facial recognition, and we have elevated cognitive abilities

Satan’s Footman: well, like I just said, that's one of the differences

Satan’s Footman: so anyway, we began to form cultures, we started creating spoken language
Satan’s Footman: we became more sophisticated
Satan’s Footman: but we still had certain fundamental instincts that guided all of this
Satan’s Footman: those instincts are all based on individual and group survival
Satan’s Footman: so one day, somebody wondered what we came from
Satan’s Footman: the first gods were created
Satan’s Footman: so this first guy, he becomes the first shaman
Satan’s Footman: so the shaman goes up to the tribe leader and tells him about these god
Satan’s Footman: s
Satan’s Footman: the tribe leader is like "that's a good idea. is there anything more?'
Satan’s Footman: so religion was born
Satan’s Footman: and through religion, the first laws
Satan’s Footman: in order to please the gods, there were certain things that we should do
Satan’s Footman: the fundamentals were: don't eat eachother, don't kill eachother unless it's in defense of tribe and/or family, keep breeding, and help one another
Satan’s Footman: in the bible all of these are addressed, and a WHOLE LOT more
Satan’s Footman: so these first tribes that had religions began to prosper over other, less developed tribes
Satan’s Footman: why was this?
Satan’s Footman: because they had please the gods?
Satan’s Footman: or because their religion
Satan’s Footman: was a set of laws
Satan’s Footman: created to see that as many people survived as possible
Satan’s Footman: if you ever read the bible and you look at some of the regulations for diseases, you'll find a passage talking about leprosy
Satan’s Footman: and it says that people with leprosy should be cast out of the village and made to cry "unclean" so that no one else would be touched by their uncleanliness
Satan’s Footman: this was so other people wouldn't contract the disease
Satan’s Footman: but people of the time thought that lepers had displeased god and had become ritualistically unclean
Satan’s Footman: a lot things pop up in there like that
Satan’s Footman: there were regulations about how to dispose of bodily wastes
Satan’s Footman: about how women should best deal with menstruation
Satan’s Footman: and about gay people
Satan’s Footman: there is a commandment about gay people
Satan’s Footman: it says something along the lines of "thou shalt not be gay," in so many words
Satan’s Footman: but ok, think about it
Satan’s Footman: if a guy is screwing another guy, he's not screwing a girl. and by the same token, if a women is screwing other girls, she isn't screwing guys
Satan’s Footman: no children are born from this, are they?
Satan’s Footman: back then, there were only about 10,000 people in the tribe of Israel
Satan’s Footman: in the book of numbers, there's a census that says as much
Satan’s Footman: they needed more people
Satan’s Footman: so, to up the population, they outlawed homosexuality
Satan’s Footman: just like the "love thy neighbor" thing was to promote community unity so that in hard times they could unite in war or famine
Satan’s Footman: so they would survive
Satan’s Footman: so, going back to survival of the fittest
Satan’s Footman: now that humans are as advanced as they are, they don't NEED most of the laws of Moses’ time
Satan’s Footman: new testament had a lot to do with the re-writing of some of those laws
Satan’s Footman: I mean, are we going to go extinct from a low birth rate?
Satan’s Footman: of course not!
Satan’s Footman: there is going to be 14 billion people by the time we are 30
Satan’s Footman: literally
Satan’s Footman: the population will double at this rate in about 15, 20 years
Satan’s Footman: so WHY DOES IT MATTER?
Satan’s Footman: why does the BIBLE matter?
Satan’s Footman: and why do we still have god
Satan’s Footman: god was our way of surviving
Satan’s Footman: and there are a lot more things in our society that can be explained by that, but that's another argument
