What are some general good instructions that should be given to judges for the following categories and/or what are some general guidelines that a contestant should use when competing in any of these categories?

1) Interview / Bio
2) Swimsuit
3) Gown
4) Fitness
5) Fashion Wear

Here are my thoughts (based on a ten point score system):
1) Interview - she must be able to talk to anyone; she needs to be passionate about something, but (unless it is Mrs. International) she doesn't need national 501C3 contacts.
She needs to choose a well fitted and flattering interview outfit. Her makeup and hair need to suit her. It is okay for a contestant to have different tastes, but overall, she needs to appear presentable and appropriate. Deduct 3 points if she can't do that.

Bio - did she prepare a well written bio that easily allows you to generate questions? Typos/misspellings/grammar errors? Bad bio - deduct 2 points.

Remaining 5 points are discretionary based upon your impression of her ability to interact with you (including whether or not she is passionate about a cause). If no one asks her questions about her platform, you can assume (or not assume) her dedication based upon her bio.

2) Swimsuit – Toned and fit body is worth 4 points. This is one area where there isn’t much discretion – she is either reasonably fit or not. If she is not fit at all – ie – skinny fat (thin girl with no tone) or clearly has 20 points to loose, then all four points should be deducted. Nicely tones girls get 3 points. Really toned girls 4 points.

fit/flatter/hair/makeup/jewelry – 3 points. Essentially, she needs to show that she is capable of putting herself together in a given set of circumstances – ie – is her hair/makeup/outfit/jewelry appropriate for a swimsuit competition? Is she wearing enough makeup for the stage lighting? Does the outfit over-power her? Does anything stand out in a negative way?

She needs to have stage presence (3 points) - you smile when you see her up there; she shines.

3) Gown – fit/flatter/hair/makeup/jewelry – if it all works together and does not over-power the contestant, then she gets 4 points. Does she have stage presence? 4 points. Can she walk well in this gown? 2 points.

4) Fitness Wear – same as swimsuit

5) Fashion Wear – same as gown

When I directed I put similar subcategories right on the score sheets. Might be easier that way. These are good suggestions!15:26:37 05/30/12 Wed
well said. All this will be moot if your judges aren't trained (click)get on the same page02:23:56 05/31/12 Thu
Great point. How do you approach judge training?OP09:58:14 06/09/12 Sat
The Miss America Organization offers Judges seminars at a low cost. I've always thought this was a great way to get the basics in judging under your belt. If your judging says you are MAO certified it doesn't hurtLou07:50:43 07/24/12 Tue
FIT.....that is a touchy subject A size 0 gal 5 foot has nothing to loosyour statement about having 20 poinds to loose is not on point either. MOST contestants have lost 20-80 pounds and work out daily. You need to ask the contestant what their schedule is14:38:14 07/24/12 Tue
