Anybody else dread the day parent-teacher conferences occur? My teachers requested a conference with my parents and that could turn out horribly - for me, anyways.

Ivy,

Our parents are REQUIRED to meet with each of u Instructors at least once per term. I (Levi) wish my parents would be a lot more specific about what they say. But, all we ever hear is that they are proud of us, we are doing good and so on. I am sure that more comes out than that, but we are not told! I think that is weird, don't you?

Ivy, my Dad wonders why you are dreading this, and why you think it could turn out horribly? He doesn't know why you'd feel this way, because you are such a good student. And, you know what? None of us get it, either. What's wrong?

Hi guys,

At my school, the conferences are optional unless the teacher or parent requests it. In my case, the teachers requested it. They probably do say more in the conferences. I remember one year my dad went to my conference because my mom was busy and he came back saying that my teacher preferred the American League over the National League in baseball, which is really strange because we live in National League territory. I don't think they could go on for hours just talking about students, though, without getting off track at least once.

I'm dreading it because, as I mention, the teachers requested it. I am a good student academic-wise and behavior-wise, but school bores me. I don't know why they requested it, though. It might be because I argue a lot - especially with certain teachers. Or, some of the things I pulled in the past few week, whether pranks, things I wrote or said, are questionable. English teachers I had in the past called me blunt. Those are my hypotheses.

Maybe your teachers need to tell them good things.

You would know. Have you been having academic issues or behavior issues? If not, don't worry about it.

Also it may just be routine procedure to meet parents.

Good luck!

Hi Ivy,

I don't usually sweat the parent-teacher confernces. My brothers do sometimes. I hope it goes well. When is the conference?

I think it will be OK. Let me share a story.

I was in 8th grade and I was called to the principal's office. OK, I had never been in trouble before and I could not imagine why I was called. I was scared and I was going over everything in my mind. I had to sit outside the principal's office with the secretary because the principal was busy. She was busy paddling a sixth grader. When he came out crying and holding his bottom, I almost fainted. I was sure I was next.

Well, I wasn't in trouble. I had been called to tell me I was selected 8th grade citizen and that I would represent our school in a state contest.

So, Ivy, it is not always bad news.

I wish you well and hope you have good news.

Don't worry Ivy, I'm sure things will be fine. I always get massively worked up about them but they're never as bad as you expect. Good luck all the same.

Lucy

Hi guys,

Thanks for the reassurances. I'm still dreading it, though. It's in two weeks and the conferences at my school are usually optional. They give kids a paper to give to their parents to mark if they want a conference or not. However, I didn't get that paper. I got a sheet saying that my teachers are requesting a conference with my parents. I don't know if I have any behavioral problems that are out of the ordinary.

It might be good news, though, so I'm not terribly pessimistic. And again, thanks for the reassurances.

So what transpired from this, Ivy?

The teachers just told my parents that I was a good student, who may have had minor behavior transgressions. Oh, and that they were worried about my "lack of direction." I don't know what they mean. I'm only in 8th grade. Ask me about my direction when I apply to colleges.

I asked my Dad if I should be worried because I don't know what I want to do "when I grow up," and he just laughed. He said that there was lots of time until I need to worry about any of that.

That is good because there are a zillion things that interest me! And, there are lots of fields I don't know much about- like astro-physics. Dad says it is lots of math, but he didn't know much more than that.
