I’m a longtime supporter of both the Miss Florida and Miss America Organizations. I’m not here to stir up drama, but to raise a serious concern that I believe deserves attention—especially from those who care about the integrity and values this program stands for.
A new local competition has suddenly appeared in Florida: Miss Sunshine State & Miss Sunshine State Teen. Many of us are puzzled by the timing. This was never mentioned during Miss Florida and yet, it was announced just one week later, with the competition scheduled to take place only ten days after the announcement.
What’s most concerning is the individual slated to run it.
This person has a long history in the pageant world, but also a pattern of deeply troubling behavior—financial misconduct, questionable affiliations, and poor treatment of contestants. Her daughter once held the title of Miss Florida Teen USA under Robyn when she directed the USA program. After the daughter switched to MAO and placed first runner-up at Miss Florida’s Outstanding Teen, the mother filed two lawsuits against the Miss Florida Organization, attempting to get a judge to force the crown to her daughter. These cases are public record—check the Miami-Dade Clerk of Courts website for details.
She currently runs two other programs: Miss American Teen & Collegiate and StayGorgeousGirl.com, both of which appear to operate more as personal revenue generators than scholarship-based competitions. She’s even holding another pageant—at the exact same time and location as this upcoming Miss Florida Preliminary in Jacksonville this Saturday. And let’s be honest: when entry fees exceed the value of the “scholarships” awarded, it’s hard to call it a legitimate scholarship competition.
I find this deeply troubling. What safeguards are in place to ensure that locals are:
Thoroughly vetted?
This person lost her dental license in Florida due to egregious malpractice. You can find the documentation online, along with a now-closed practice that had only one-star reviews—because that’s the lowest rating possible. She endangered the health and safety of her patients for years.
Run by individuals with integrity?
This person has been sued repeatedly by vendors she failed to pay—I found over a dozen cases in Duval County court records. She has a documented history of bankruptcy filings, foreclosure notices, and using the legal system to avoid accountability. Is this who we want mentoring young women?
Transparent in their affiliations?
MAO is supposed to stand for clarity, purpose, and public trust. These other organizations do not operate with those same standards, and parents and contestants deserve to know who they're really working with.
To make matters worse, many people are afraid to speak up—fearing retribution from Florida’s state director, who has a reputation for blackballing contestants and questionable behavior.
I respectfully urge both MAO leadership and the Miss Florida Board of Directors to take a closer look at this situation. If the new local is legitimate and above board, that’s great. But if not, allowing it to move forward unchecked will reflect poorly on the entire system and undermine the trust of families and titleholders across the state.
Families deserve transparency. Contestants deserve fairness. And this organization deserves better than silence when something doesn’t feel right.
