Gown was gorgeous, talent was minimal but all she would have had to do was recite her ABC's. But most importantly, she had B. Don' Magness and that whole Texas powerhouse organization behind her. This was back when Texas was at it's most powerful. Shirley's was probably in the top 3rd of contestants, but not one of the Top 10 best, in my opinion. I wasn't watching where I was going and turned around and ran slam into her. She was wearing the gown she was crowned in. I was mortified that I had just bulldozed Miss America. I was stammering around going " I'm so sorry...." she just smiled the biggest smile and said "That's ok" and kept moving. She was unreal beautiful. When I think of Miss Americas who chose a gown so perfect for them that the effect was magical, I think of 3 - Kimberly Aiken, Debra Maffett, and Shirley. Breathtaking beauty. She was an incredibly warm and engaging young woman whom you wanted to talk to and get to know. Everyone harps on her win because of talent but i think her talent just proved how relatable she was and she could actually sing (as opposed to others who have made top 5 in the past). I had no problem wth her win at all. She was by far better than the Bollywood dancer from NY and some others who have won Miss America in the past 20 years. She was actually doing the Curling coverage at the olympics and did really well. And she did some really good videos for the Masters You Tube channel (Under the Umbrellas ???) and was a good interviewer covering a variety of people and subjects, which showed her Golf Channel experience was not wasted. I can barely remember the dixie cup talent and the sorority stuff, but in the here and now she's done just fine.
