- Forgot to add Shirley Cothran. (NT) -- No name, 15:04:58 01/29/26 Thu (NoHost/172.56.87.150)
- I agree with most of your choices, but no one was beating Cothran that year ( and I had a family member competing) First off, she was drop dead gorgeous in person and had a swimsuit body that would not quit. Gown was gorgeous, talent was minimal but all she would have had to do was recite her ABC's. But most importantly, she had B. Don' Magness and that whole Texas powerhouse organization behind her. This was back when Texas was at it's most powerful. (NT) -- No name, 15:25:23 01/29/26 Thu (113.sub-174-216-10.myvzw.com/174.216.10.113)
- I think that, at 21, she already had a master's degree and used this scholarship towards her Ph.D. Many fans loved her talent performance. (NT) -- No name, 16:36:56 01/29/26 Thu (NoHost/163.116.145.66)
- I would have much preferred Darlene Compton, Miss Kentucky being chosen Miss America. Darlene sang Mira from Carnival. She was amazingly beautiful, and won Preliminary Talent. (NT) -- No name, 17:05:41 01/29/26 Thu (NoHost/172.56.84.144)
- I'm pretty by the book (hence the name hah) when scoring, so that year my choice was definitely California's Lucianne Buchanan because her talent made her a better all-around choice, but at the same time, I'm not surprised to hear this about Shirley. When I think of Miss Americas who chose a gown so perfect for them that the effect was magical, I think of 3 - Kimberly Aiken, Debra Maffett, and Shirley. Breathtaking beauty. - If you had ever had even one conversation with Kira prior to Miss America, you would not have been surprised as you would have known her interview would be a 15! She was an incredibly warm and engaging young woman whom you wanted to talk to and get to know. Everyone harps on her win because of talent but i think her talent just proved how relatable she was and she could actually sing (as opposed to others who have made top 5 in the past). I had no problem wth her win at all. She was by far better than the Bollywood dancer from NY and some others who have won Miss America in the past 20 years. | Tawny had a great group of runner ups. Rebecca King also had a strong group of runner ups. An old story about Judy Hieke the 1st RU to King and Miss WI was that her dad was pulled aside and was told she would not win and the powers that be couldn’t let her win because last years winner Terry Meeuwsen was Miss WI. The story was that having back to back state winners nearly bankrupted the pageant in 1960. (NT) | No name (ip98-162-249-128.ok.ok.cox.net/98.162.249.128) | 23:27:53 01/29/26 Thu |
- For me, Teresa Scanlan would have to be at the top of this list. That must have been one hellacious interview. I would agree that Tawny and Kira were major surprises but certainly not Shirley Cothran. She was one of the most beautiful Miss Americas ever. - Interesting to hear your thoughts on Tawny's runner-ups. I personally was super non-aligned with the judging in that pageant. My Top 3 out of the Top 10 all missed the Top 5... Mary Ellen Richardson of Texas, Cynthia Carpenter of Massachusetts, and Ann Schmalzried of Florida. Of the actual Top 5, I'd have gone with Arizona's Stacey Petersen, but she's in the bottom 3 of my personal winners. - Are you referring to MS winning two years in a row, 1958 and 1959? Why would that bankrupt the pageant? (NT) -- No name, 23:49:28 02/10/26 Tue (NoHost/212.15.84.98)
- I never understood that reasoning. How would having back to back winners bankrupt the national pageant. Judy Heike should have won that year. She was the epitome of what Miss America looked like at that time. (NT) -- No name, 11:11:52 03/20/26 Fri (184-97-16-1.lcrs.centurylink.net/184.97.16.1)

| My bottom 10 Miss Americas (1959-2018) based on finals competition are: (1959) Mary Ann Mobley, (1963) Jacquelyn Mayer, (1967) Jane Jayroe, (1970) Pamela Eldred, (1974) Rebecca Ann King, (1976) Tawny Godin, (1996) Shawntel Smith, (2003) Erika Harold, (2015) Kira Kazantsev, (2018) Cara Mund. Mary Anne, Jane, Pamela and Erika had all won prelim awards (so theoretically couldn't have been too 'out of nowhere'), so my answer is my other 6 :) (NT) | Pageant Statistician (99-74-180-249.lightspeed.cicril.sbcglobal.net/99.74.180.249) | 05:45:38 01/30/26 Fri |
- I had neglected to mention Shawntel Smith in my list of surprises. I had her nowhere near the top. As you may recall, that year the top three were all non-preliminary winners. (NT) -- No name, 09:39:59 01/30/26 Fri (216-24-92-182.unassigned.ntelos.net/216.24.92.182)
- Mary Ann! Blasphemy! Lol How could she be on your bottom 10? That face! That personality! She was so beautiful and cute. Before my time, but I've seen the tape. I thought she was a slam dunk winner. (NT) -- No name, 11:02:17 01/30/26 Fri (113.sub-174-216-10.myvzw.com/174.216.10.113)
- Before my time too - the year my mother was born hah. I have no objections to your jovial reply, but one thing I've never understood, is imagine how boring discussion would be if we all had the same lists! For the record, I had Mary Anne 7th in Talent, 3rd in Gown (where my scoring focuses on fashion / fit), 8th in Swim (where my scoring focuses on fitness and figure, which admittedly weren't really the goals back in 1959, which admittedly brought with it a certain level of disjointedness in my scoring. Overall, I had her 7th of the Top 10, and 4th of the Top 5 (ahead of only Iowa, who ironically was her 1RU). So not bad scores by any means, I just had her ranked 51st of the 60 Miss Americas I've seen in competition. For the record, and speaking of scoring disjointedness, I thought the runaway winner of the pageant that year was Anita Bryant... who of course ended up being the literal devil lol. - I would have loved to have seen Alabama or Mississippi in the top five over OK and CA, even Kansas. Wasn't Kansas a double preliminary winner? (NT) -- No name, 10:35:15 01/31/26 Sat (NoHost/212.15.84.241)
- Indeed, I have her dead last - lower than even Erika Harold. Shawntel is a gorgeous lady, but brought absolutely nothing of note in on-stage competition. But I also don't buy into the 'She won because of the Oklahoma City bombing' conspiracy theory, which always felt a little too on the nose. Has her interview ever been released? It likely came up in her Interview and may have gotten her some extra points, but other than that, why would anyone put their integrity / reputation on the line to fix a win for a random lady who happened to be from a state that was having a hard year? Doesn't make much sense. (NT) -- Pageant Statistician, 00:08:00 02/01/26 Sun (99-74-180-249.lightspeed.cicril.sbcglobal.net/99.74.180.249)
- It was very justified, to me, that Tawny Godin won Miss America. She stood out with her All-American persona. Her original piano composition was a rarity. She later said it wasn't as good as she hoped, or something similar. But esteemed composer, Henry Mancini told her that he watched her on Miss America and that she deserved the win. | Tawny was a HUGE shocker for me. I exclaimed, "WHO??"" when Bert Parks announced her. DeFord wrote an article for Seventeen Magazine explaining her win (which happened in interview). The 75th Anniversary in 1995 wasnt a strong group whatsoever . The judges clearly made up their minds about Shawntel from the start. She was called first which means the judges saw her first I expected Alabama to at least make top 5 but for some reason she didnt (NT) | No name (NoHost/169.156.15.207) | 13:45:26 02/11/26 Wed |

| Is there a website page (I thought I saw once a couple years ago during COVID when someone was bored with themselves) that showed official crown portraits of all Miss America winners from 1921 to 2021---perhaps due to the 100th year of Miss America celebrations. | Be nice to see that again--all of them shown at once vs individual photos.
