I don't know much about tensioner prices since mine has been working well and I haven't had to look into replacing it yet. I hear the S52 tensioner is the way to go though. Gustave writes about it on his site www.e30m3performance.com I wouldn't worry about the chain breaking. Just worry about it jumping a few teeth due to too much slack caused by a tensioner that's failing to do it's job. Keep an eye on the oil level also.
