I can see how with the ranking system you could "keep" someone from winning based on your judges instructions, but the top 5 should be composed of the top 5 scores, so it's still surprising that Meredith didn't make it. Don't forget after prelims all scores are thrown out and judges give each girl only 1 score, the composite which counts for 35% going into finals night. Even if a girl looks consistent onstage, if the judges didn't "like" her in interview (not saying she did poorly in interview but that judges simply didn't click with her), judges are not going to give a 9 or 10 composite score which you need to get in order to place in top 5 ballot (click in)

Then on finals night if you aren't already in the top 5 in the judges' minds they are only going to score you a 6 or a 7 in every area of competition on Saturday night in order to ensure the top 5 girls they want on the ballot get on the ballot. Composite scoring and top 10 discussion changes everything
