In reply to: No shocks here 's message, "Remember: not only does the director choose the judges, but every director is allowed to give the judges input on traits they'd like in their winner. Every state does it, the OLD director did it, and so I'm sure the NEW director did it as well. It's not wrong, it is just different from the past because we have new leadership. That's okay!!!!! Instead of being upset about who didn't make top 5, let's celebrate the sweet girls that did make it and stand behind our new Miss AZ! (:" on 08:09:45 06/26/14 Thu

[> [> [> Subject: Yes. It is fair for the director to tell the judges no returners just like it is fair to tell them any other criteria for a contestant. If a returner fit the criteria that the director wanted, then she would have been chosen. Yes it is a transition but there is nothing "unfair" about this. The state director has ALWAYS had input into the winner whether we like it or not.

[> [> [> [> Subject: saying something like "no returners" is like saying no brunettes or no minorities NOT what the director is asked to charge the judges with. They are told to tell the judges things like "we really want someone who will do well at miss america" or "we want a great STATE " titleholder. OR even "talent is not important to us" but they are not supposed to blatantly dismiss any contestants

[> [> [> Subject: Are you implying they said that? I can see how with the ranking system you could "keep" someone from winning based on your judges instructions, but the top 5 should be composed of the top 5 scores, so it's still surprising that Meredith didn't make it. That being said, Alexa seems to have a strong platform, and maybe that's what they were looking for.

[> [> [> [> Subject: Top 5/10 scores only get you into top 10. Don't forget after prelims all scores are thrown out and judges give each girl only 1 score, the composite which counts for 35% going into finals night. Even if a girl looks consistent onstage, if the judges didn't "like" her in interview (not saying she did poorly in interview but that judges simply didn't click with her), judges are not going to give a 9 or 10 composite score which you need to get in order to place in top 5 ballot (click in)

highly doubt new director said "no returners"

Then on finals night if you aren't already in the top 5 in the judges' minds they are only going to score you a 6 or a 7 in every area of competition on Saturday night in order to ensure the top 5 girls they want on the ballot get on the ballot. Composite scoring and top 10 discussion changes everything
[> [> [> Subject: I am SURE she did not say no returners... Let's face it, the returners simply did not earn their spot in the Top 5.

[> [> [> [> Subject: I am still unsure of new directors but I dont think that she would express that she wanted no returners to win. I honestly think that the top 5 girls just stood out more to the judges than the other 5. If it were a completely different panel of judges, those top 5 may not have even been in top 5, it all boils down to the judges. I know we all have out personal opinions, but all this gripping about it is not going to change the outcome. Yes, it is shocking, but the judges saw something in Alexa.

[> [> [> [> [> [> Subject: Im sure it does as it does with others. But it was clear that they had more of a lasting impression on the judges in order for them to score higher to get that top 5. We do not know what went on in that interview room.

[> [> [> [> [> [> Subject: I was surprised too but when you think about it, it's really not that surprising. Haley is beautiful, had a stunning dress and great talent. Lauren just looks like a bombshell on stage. Hannah was consistently good in the whole competition. And Rachael is stellar in everything (except maybe talent).

The composite score is 30% on finals night
