  Democrats are making a big push to blame the water crisis in a Democrat-dominated city, overseen by a Democrat Environmental Protection Agency of unprecedented power, on the only Republican within a thousand miles, Michigan Governor Rick Snyder.
  
  The truth is that Flint, Michigan is an extreme case of what always happens to cities after generations of Democrat governance, just like the Democrat Wonder City of Detroit, their peaceful Shangri-La of Ferguson, Missouri, their gun-free paradise of Chicago, hurricane-ravaged New Orleans… or Washington, D.C., which had a water crisis similar to Flint’s a decade ago. We’re not supposed to piece together that every single disaster area has been Democrat-dominated for generations.
  
  Notice how in each of those cases, Democrats scrambled to find a Republican somewhere in the vicinity (or, in the case of New Orleans, suddenly declare state and local government utterly irrelevant, and blamed Republican President George W.   We’re supposed to forget that Flint’s Democrat mayor in 2014, Dayne Walling, made a big production out of the “historic moment” when his city decided to “return to its roots and use our own river as our drinking water supply,” after 50 years of using water from the Democrat Wonder City of Detroit. He led a crowd of onlookers in a three-two-one countdown, pushed the water-control button with a flourish, and declared “the water quality speaks for itself,” while a gaggle of Democrat politicians and officials applauded.

  Yesterday, Sheriff Joe Arpaio officially endorsed Donald Trump for president. Today, Trump shocked the country by announcing Arpaio as his pick for Vice Presidential running mate in 2016.
  
  Arpaio historically has been courted by Republican presidential candidates for endorsements, but never a Vice Presidential nomination. In the 2008 primaries, Arpaio backed former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney over a fellow Arizonan, Sen. John McCain. McCain won the GOP nomination that year. In the 2012 race, Arpaio threw his support to then-Texas Gov. Rick Perry, whose candidacy was also unsuccessful.

  Newly Released Emails Indicate Michigan Republicans Didn�t Poison Water To "Save Money"

  
  
  As Michigan Governor Rick Snyder�s tower of lies collapses around him, we are finding some extremely disturbing new pieces of evidence among the rubble. A great deal of effort is going into determining just what happened in Flint, Michigan, where a switch in water sources by the Snyder administration, ostensibly in order to help save money after Snyder�s tax cuts blew giant holes in the state budget, ended up poisoning thousands of people with toxic lead in the poor and largely African-American city of Flint.
  
  Thanks to release of email which appears to indicate that the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department (DWSD) offered Snyder a deal worth $800 million over 30 years, which would have been 20% cheaper than switching to the polluted Karegnondi Water Authority.
  
  �A high-ranking DWSD official told us today that Detroit offered a 50% reduction over what Flint had been paying Detroit. In fact, documents show that DWSD made at least six proposals to Flint, saying �the KWA pipeline can only be attributed to a �political� objective that has nothing to do with the delivery � or the price � of water.�
  
  They begin to paint a very different picture than the one we originally thought we were looking at. What appears at first to have been a tragic case of desperate cost-cutting and criminal negligence is now taking on the contours of a much deeper conspiracy in which the people of Flint were a sacrificial lamb on the alter of free market fascism.
  
  the ultimate goal was to break up and privatize the DWSD by starving it of a crucial customer base. It has already been split into two entities in 2015: the DWSD and the Great Lakes Water Authority; depriving it of the Flint contract would give the Snyder administration an excuse to sell it off to his buddies for pennies on the dollar.
  
  It just goes to show how dangerous the Republican Party�s crusade to dismantle all public institutions and replace them with privatized alternatives that put profits over the well-being of their customers truly presents to our nation. Governor Snyder, who was propelled into office with over $12 million in corporate campaign cash, has spent his entire governorship implementing all the trademark pieces of the Koch Brothers� plan for America � an Americans For Prosperity-spearheaded union killing right-to-work law (even though he promised he wouldn�t during the election); the appointment of rule-by-decree�emergency managers� for major cities; slashing corporate taxes and instituting a budget-crippling flat tax; crippling public schools with budget cuts and replacing them with charter schools.
  
  More information will reveal itself as Snyder heads to Washington to explain himself to the House Oversight Committee, but the lesson here is clear. Not only do the Congressional Republicans show little interest in any actual governance, but their governors tend to wreck the states they are supposed to lead.
  
  - Snyder blew a $454 million hole in his budget and poisoned a city;
  
  - Sam Brownback of Kansas passed corporate tax cuts that blew a $600 million hole in his state budget;
  
  - Bobby Jindal of Louisiana gave $12 billion in handouts to corporations, turning a $1 billion surplus into a $1.4 billion shortfall and a syphilis epidemic after he closed all of their Planned Parenthoods.
  
  There is little that the Republican Party has to offer the American people; they are only interested in fulfilling the whims and petty desires of the oligarchs and the ultra-wealthy while the rest of us pay the price.

  A Washington woman was seriously injured at a screening of "13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi,� by a 29-year-old man who drunkenly fumbled his pistol and discharged it, local affiliate KOMO is reporting. The unidentified woman suffered serious injuries and the man is now in custody after turning himself in.
  
  "There was a gunshot," one witness said, "and we thought it was a light bulb exploding in the theater, so no one really reacted.�
  
  The theater, located in the small central Washinton city of Renton, was playing Michael Bay's political action film '13 Hours' - a controversial film about the Benghazi raid on a US embassy in 2012 that left four Americans dead.
  
  "Preliminary accounts indicate that an intoxicated suspect entered one of the theaters and was fumbling with a handgun he had in his possession when it went off," Renton Police said in a statement, according to KOMP, "striking another patron seated in front of him."
  
  The shooter's father called police after his "distraught" son came home and confessed to the shooting. The status of the injured woman remains unknown.

  Woody Guthrie, �Old Man Trump� and a real estate empire�s racist foundations

  
  
  
  
  In December 1950, Woody Guthrie signed his name to the lease of a new apartment in Brooklyn. Even now, over half a century later, that uninspiring document prompts a double-take.
  
  Below all the legal jargon is the signature of the man who had composed �This Land Is Your Land,� the most resounding appeal to an equal share for all in America. Below that is the signature of Donald Trump�s father, Fred.
  
  Guthrie�s two-year tenancy in one of Fred Trump�s buildings and his relationship with the real estate mogul of New York�s outer boroughs produced some of Guthrie�s most bitter writings. They clearly pit America�s national balladeer against the racist foundations of the Trump real estate empire.
  
  In the postwar years, with the return of hundreds of thousands of servicemen to New York, affordable public housing had become an urgent priority.
  
  For the most part, low-cost housing projects had been left to cash-strapped state and city authorities. But when the Federal Housing Authority (FHA) finally stepped in to issue federal loans and subsidies for urban apartment blocks, one of the first developers in line, with his eye on the main chance, was Fred Trump. He made a fortune not only through the construction of public housing projects but also through collecting the rents on them.
  
  Trump would be investigated by a U.S. Senate committee in 1954 for profiteering off of public contracts, not least by overestimating his Beach Haven building charges to the tune of US$3.7 million.
  
  What Guthrie discovered all too late was Trump�s enthusiastic embrace of the FHA�s guidelines for avoiding �inharmonious uses of housing� � or as Trump biographer Gwenda Blair puts it, �a code phrase for selling homes in white areas to blacks.� As Blair points out, such �restrictive covenants� were common among FHA projects � a betrayal, if ever there was one, of the New Deal vision that had given birth to the agency.
  
  Only a year into his Beach Haven residency, Guthrie � himself a veteran � was already lamenting the bigotry that pervaded his new, lily-white neighborhood, which he�d taken to calling �Bitch Havens.�
  
  For Guthrie, Fred Trump came to personify all the viciousness of the racist codes that continued to put decent housing � both public and private � out of reach for so many of his fellow citizens:

  In 1979 Village Voice reporter Wayne Barrett published a two-part expos� about Fred and Donald Trump�s real estate empire.
  
  The most damning evidence had come from Trump�s own employees. As Barrett summarizes:
  

  According to court records, four superintendents or rental agents confirmed that applications sent to the central [Trump] office for acceptance or rejection were coded by race. Three doormen were told to discourage blacks who came seeking apartments when the manager was out, either by claiming no vacancies or hiking up the rents. A super said he was instructed to send black applicants to the central office but to accept white applications on site. Another rental agent said that Fred Trump had instructed him not to rent to blacks. Further, the agent said Trump wanted �to decrease the number of black tenants� already in the development �by encouraging them to locate housing elsewhere.�

  
  
  Guthrie had written that white supremacists like the Trumps were �way ahead of God� because

  One thing is certain: Woody Guthrie had no time for �Old Man Trump.�
  
  We can only imagine what he would think of his heir.

  Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder (R), still scrambling to address the crisis in Flint that his administration caused, reached out to the White House late last week for aid. On Saturday, President Obama agreed, declaring a federal emergency and freeing up millions of dollars in resources.
  
  But as the Detroit Free Press reported, Snyder also requested a federal disaster declaration, and on that front, Obama did not go along with the Republican governor�s appeal.
  
  

  A disaster declaration would have made larger amounts of federal funding available more quickly to help Flint residents whose drinking water is contaminated with lead. But under federal law, only natural disasters such as hurricanes and floods are eligible for disaster declarations, federal and state officials said. The lead contamination of Flint�s drinking water is a manmade catastrophe.

  Hillary Clinton, who slammed Snyder�s handling of the crisis during her interview with Rachel on Thursday, highlighted the issue again during last night�s debate, again attacking the governor�s slow, inept response. Bernie Sanders reiterated his call for the Michigan Republican to resign.
  
  As the debate ended, Snyder wrote on Twitter, �Political statements and finger pointing from political candidates only distract from solving the Flint water crisis.�

  Second, if Snyder had responded to the crisis as quickly as he responded to Hillary Clinton, Flint wouldn�t be in this mess.
  
  Meanwhile, the question of what Snyder knew about Flint and when continues to dog the governor�s office, and the Free Press� editorial board made a compelling case over the weekend that Snyder should release internal communications related to the scandal.

  Beginning with Ronald Reagan, I have voted Republican in every presidential election since I first became eligible to vote.
  
  Despite this history, and in important ways because of it, I will not vote for Donald Trump if he wins the Republican nomination.
  
  I should add that neither could I vote in good conscience for Hillary Clinton or any of the other Democrats running for president, since they oppose many of the things I have stood for in my career as a conservative � and, in the case of Mrs. Clinton, because I consider her an ethical wreck. If Mr. Trump and Mrs. Clinton were the Republican and Democratic nominees, I would prefer to vote for a responsible third-party alternative; absent that option, I would simply not cast a ballot for president. A lot of Republicans, I suspect, would do the same.
  
  There are many reasons to abstain from voting for Mr. Trump if he is nominated, starting with the fact that he would be the most unqualified president in American history. Every one of our 44 presidents has had either government or military experience before being sworn in. Mr. Trump, a real estate mogul and former reality-television star, hasn�t served a day in public office or the armed forces.
  
  During the course of this campaign he has repeatedly revealed his ignorance on basic matters of national interest � the three ways the United States is capable of firing nuclear weapons (by land, sea and air), the difference between the Quds Force in Iran and the Kurds to their west, North Korea�s nuclear tests, the causes of autism, the effects of his tax plan on the deficit and much besides.
  
  Mr. Trump has no desire to acquaint himself with most issues, let alone master them. He has admitted that he doesn�t prepare for debates or study briefing books; he believes such things get in the way of a good performance. No major presidential candidate has ever been quite as disdainful of knowledge, as indifferent to facts, as untroubled by his benightedness.
  
  It is little surprise, then, that many of Mr. Trump�s most celebrated pronouncements and promises � to quickly and �humanely� expel 11 million illegal immigrants, to force Mexico to pay for the wall he will build on our southern border, to defeat the Islamic State �very quickly� while as a bonus taking its oil, to bar Muslims from immigrating to the United States � are nativistic pipe dreams and public relations stunts.
  
  Even more disqualifying is Mr. Trump�s temperament. He is erratic, inconsistent and unprincipled. He possesses a streak of crudity and cruelty that manifested itself in how he physically mocked a Times journalist with a disability, ridiculed Senator John McCain for being a P.O.W., made a reference to �blood� intended to degrade a female journalist and compared one of his opponents to a child molester.
  
  Mr. Trump�s legendary narcissism would be comical were it not dangerous in someone seeking the nation�s highest office � as he demonstrated when he showered praise on the brutal, anti-American president of Russia, Vladimir V. Putin, responding to Mr. Putin�s expression of admiration for Mr. Trump.
  
  �It is always a great honor,� Mr. Trump said last month, �to be so nicely complimented by a man so highly respected within his own country and beyond.�
  
  Mr. Trump�s virulent combination of ignorance, emotional instability, demagogy, solipsism and vindictiveness would do more than result in a failed presidency; it could very well lead to national catastrophe. The prospect of Donald Trump as commander in chief should send a chill down the spine of every American.
  
  Mr. Trump�s presence in the 2016 race has already had pernicious effects, but they�re nothing compared with what would happen if he were the Republican standard-bearer. The nominee, after all, is the leader of the party; he gives it shape and definition. If Mr. Trump heads the Republican Party, it will no longer be a conservative party; it will be an angry, bigoted, populist one. Mr. Trump would represent a dramatic break with and a fundamental assault on the party�s best traditions.
  
  I will go further: Mr. Trump is precisely the kind of man our system of government was designed to avoid, the type of leader our founders feared � a demagogic figure who does not view himself as part of our constitutional system but rather as an alternative to it.
  
  Donald Trump has altered the political equation because he has altered the moral equation. For this lifelong Republican, at least, he is beyond the pale. Party loyalty has limits.
  
  No votes have yet been cast, primary elections are fluid, and sobriety often prevails, so Mr. Trump is hardly the inevitable Republican nominee. But, stunningly, that is now something that is quite conceivable. If this scenario comes to pass, many Republicans will find themselves in a situation they once thought unimaginable: refusing to support the nominee of their party because it is the best thing that they can do for their party and their country.
