Author: Kalerren
Subject: The young man of about 19 turns walks onto the sands...

His wiry brown hair framing his tanned face, he walks up to the weyrleaders, a smile on his face. "Greetings, S'sha, T'ren. I hope I have not arrived here too late..." He turns to Jeneth and Kylith, and bows formally. "And to you too, Kylith and Jeneth. Your children are magnificent. As well they should be, coming from such magnificent parents." Deciding it would likely be best for him to join the few remaining candidates, he walks onto the sands, the heat penetrating easily through the thin soles of his sandals. The white candidates robe billowing around him, he looks about at the scene around him, then looks briefly down at his hands. Hard, calloused herder hands, from working in the hills with his fathers beasts. The thin scar running down his thigh told tale of a semi-disastrous occurance, dealing with himself as a young lad and a wounded bull which he had been trying to remove back to the central buildings in order for it to be inspected by a healer who was stationed nearby who, luckily, had known a great deal about such matters. The bull, not liking the additional pain caused by the movement in the least, had severely savaged Kalerren's leg. Luckily for him, with great assistence from the healer, all had been healed but for the scar and an occaisional pain that shot through his knee whenever his heart-rate rose too greatly.

Returning his attention to the hatching occuring about him, he watches in awe as first one queen hatches, then... ANOTHER?!?!? By the sharding Red Star... As well he knew, that had never occurred in the history of Pern! If he didn't impress, this would surely be a marvel to tell tales of to his descendents... If he ever had any. His family was wholly committed to marrying him off to some fertile young thing, then passing the land and the family trade on to him and leaving it at that. But Kalerren... No, he wanted to DO something. To make a difference. And that wasn't going to happen by being locked up in the hills tending after scrubby walking hearthrugs.

A flash of bronze catches his eye, and he looks up, to see Jeneth. The regal bronze seems to pull at his heart, and he knew then, more than ever before, that he wanted to be a dragonrider. If he didn't impress here, on these sands, today, he would travel from Weyr to Weyr until, at last, he did.
