Author: True/Zairith (Reign, Spirit) and Tr’ln/Latroth (Agust)
Subject: How many times have you told me you love her?<^>=Congrats=

(Side note—song applies to True only, NOT Tr’ln. XD And also, this was a plot that NS and I had been working to start, though now NS is gone and I own True... so, yeah... The show must go on! =P)

As many times as I've wanted to tell you the truth...

Emerald eyes rolled as a smile played on a girl of about 24 turns’ lips for the umpteenth time that night. Before that night, she had smiled about five times in her life. Now, her mouth seemed sore from the foreign practice.

“Hon, this is human food.”

It is? The voice was not heard aloud, but in True’s mind. A beautiful, glittering green dragonet sat beside her Impresser, looking intently at the food True had brought to the table. She crooned, and gave a small hiss. It looks poisonous, True. Are you sure you can eat that meat? It isn’t even bloody.

True shook her head, sending a shower of black silk around her torso. Her smile remained as she pushed the locks back again. “It’s cooked, Zairith. The blood was taken out. Humans would die if they ate the same meat you did.”

Zairith’s eyes turned a swirling red. Then I shall never share my meals.

“Neither shall I.” True said, taking a delicate white hand and adjusting the black tunic and pants she was wearing. She felt at her thigh, and was relieved to find the beltknife in its sheath, which was attached to the outside of the garments. She had another in her right boot, and she brushed it gently with the side of her sock, enjoying the feeling of comfort she had now that she was armed. Without her knives, she had felt naked and defenseless.

You aren’t defenseless, True. You don’t need knives. The green swished her tail, wrapping the end around her human’s right ankle.

“Yes, I do, Zair.”

If you’re sure, I guess, then it doesn’t bother me.

True shook her head, but jumped as she felt a strange sensation on hr shoulder. With lightning-fast reflexes, she grabbed the object—which turned out to be a hand. She turned as she did this... to look into the smiling face of the one turn older boy.

How long have I stood here beside you?

The 25-turn-old laughed softly. “Got ya, True.”

True rolled her eyes with a small sliver of a smile, and motioned to the chair next to her. The rider sat down, still grinning from his little trick, and looked at her. His loose shirt was unbuttoned at the top, and a light shade of blue, which matched his soft, light eyes exactly. His inky locks fell smoothly, framing his face in dark silk. He wore the shoulder knots of a weyrling brownrider, though he was an Impress-e from Kylith, so True knew he would soon graduate that class. Besides, Rinali was going to quit his class and go onto teaching hers, wasn’t she?

“That wasn’t funny, Tr’ln.” True said. Tr’ln laughed softly again.

“Then why are you smiling?” he asked his friend. They’d met just after he’d impressed, when Tr’ln one day found himself feeling sick. True was a journeywoman healer, so she’d treated him, and they’d gotten into conversation. She’d been one of his only friends, and vise versa, since.

True rolled her eyes. “How’s Latroth? And have you met Zairith?” She gestured delicately to the dragonet, which was eyeing the newcomer with her outsized eyes, looking slightly bug-like with her full gaze.

Tr’ln nodded. “Lat’s fine. Sleeping, last time I checked on him, though he might be up now.” The brownrider looked over at the greenling, and chuckled. “She’s nice. Good colouring, if I may say.” He reached out a hand. The green, eyeing him with curiosity rather than suspicion, decided he seemed nice, and shoved her muzzle into his hand. Laughing, Tr’ln scratched the eye ridge the way he would Latroth, and watched as the dragon dropped a few eyelids. “Pretty little one, isn’t she? And shards, I forgot how small greens are at birth compared to browns.”

“Small is alright, isn’t it?” True asked, reaching out and putting a hand on the warm neck. Zair crooned at the extra attention.

I like him. He scratches nice.

True laughed. “I think we’re spoiling her,” she said, turning to look at her companion. Tr’ln, in turn, shrugged.

“Maybe it’s good to spoil your life mate every once in a while. I know I’ve spoiled Lat.” He seemed to think about something. “And, you can’t really spoil her as much as a gold, can you? Not to mean any disrespect—I think they’re wonderful too—but golds tend to get very vain, you know? Like when I was talking to Talla. She says that Mylanith’s a handful, and likes to think of herself as better than the others—”

I live through you...

True couldn’t pay much attention to the rest of his story. Talla. All Tr’ln seemed to be able to talk about was her at times; he’d even gone as far as to admit he fancied her sometimes, though they didn’t talk about that unless Lat was asleep—Tr’ln didn’t want Latroth making fun of him.

But, True didn’t want to listen to it now. She pretended to, and even nodded at times that seemed appropriate, but she couldn’t bring herself to listen.

Tr’ln was the best friend she’d ever had. He trusted her with everything, from the little things like who he ate breakfast with to the things like his nagging desire to be a father to Trag, his bastard son. True had never been trusted so fully, and found it easy, in turn, to trust him, though she normally didn’t mention anything deep unless he asked it of her. She remembered feeling his pain when he told her about Tsuga and Trag, and how he felt he’d never repair a relationship with Tsuga or start a solid one with Trag. She had helped him take care of Lat, and had talked with him for her entire stay at the Weyr.

She’d admitted to herself long ago that she’d developed feelings for her companion beside her. And it killed her to know that he had his eye on another, a younger woman of higher rank. To know that he spoke of someone else... it was just devastating. True had told herself for a long time that he could never love her, that he was a rider... but...

And now, now that there was a chance for them to be together as riders, he had to find Talla. Not that she blamed the goldrider; it wasn’t Talla’s fault he’d fallen. But, still, the thought of Talla arose feelings within her that pained her more than she thought possible, more even than her past headache problem. Her crush liked the girl. She couldn’t take that lightly if she wanted to.

You love him? The green asked, with a mental frown. This is a bad story. He feels for another.

‘I know. That’s why I must get over it.’

Can you?

‘I hope so.’
True frowned in thought.

“True?” Tr’ln’s voice broke her out of her thoughts. She looked up into his caring eyes, which were now concerned. “You alright? You kinda zoned out...”

True faked a smile. “I’m fine.” Tr’ln didn’t seem convinced.

“If you don’t want to tell me, you don’t have to.” He said softly. It broke her heart to keep secrets from him...

“I’m just nervous about riding, that’s all.”

“Oh.” He brightened up. “That’s all right, I can help you.”

He didn’t need to know everything just yet.

You looked through me...
