In reply to: Halzay(Elizabeth) and Salzay 's message, "Ghosts are no different than you..." on 17:36:39 09/23/05 Fri

S’peer seated himself opposite Halzay, a small smile crossing his face when he heard Sally’s voice. He’d only known her for a few weeks, and already he was in love with being a father – he’d been firmly regulating his behaviour and temper since Rinali’s warning that she would move him if there was any trouble. He didn’t want to be removed from Salzay’s life just as he was getting to know her! But of course, knowing Sally meant having Halzay around, and that was a punishment in itself. She always looked so scared of him. But she’s beautiful when she smiles… he realised when she looked down at her daughter – but it saddened him again almost instantly. I bet she’s never smiled that way at a man before…

“Well…” He began cautiously, leaning on the table, but not too close to the greenrider. “I’d like to be a father to Sally – but only if you say I can.” That was the issue, after all – what if Halzay didn’t want her daughter to know him? S’peer didn’t even want to think about it. “I was thinking, maybe I could take her out sometimes – to the beach, or somewhere – and we could get to know each other?” Always tentative about making the suggestions – he didn’t want to pressure her at all, now.

“She’s broken him.” G’rein shook his head, looking over at his friend. “That girl. He’s not the same – she destroyed something inside him.”
“This started after M’red.” Trust Lavan to always find something neutral to say. “What he did then – it scared him. That flight just tipped him over.”
They were sitting together in the Lower Caverns – and S’peer was conspicuously absent. “I suppose so…” G’rein admitted reluctantly. “…He was drinking a lot more after…after M’red…but he was never like this before.”
“You can’t hate her, G’rein.”
“Why not? He’s changed. He’s broken – and she did it.”
“And I suppose you forgave M’red?”
“That’s different, and you know it.” Lavan had no idea of the true nature of the injuries that G’rein had sustained during the flight with M’red – he had been told that G’rein was badly beaten. “M’red meant it. He always does. S’peer would never hurt anyone!”
“Except M’red. He’s got a vicious temper, G’rein. You can’t deny it.”
“I can’t believe you’re suggesting he would do that on purpose!”
“I’m not. I’m just saying that he has a history of violence – maybe that’s why she didn’t forgive him.”

He had recovered – that was evident. But G’rein was right in some ways – the part of S’peer that simply did things without thinking had been destroyed. He thought things out carefully now – he was just…different.
