R'ven isn't eavesdropping, exactly. He comforts himself with the knowledge that he'd sat down first, so technically, the three riders nearby are imposing their conversation on him and not the other way around. The guilty feeling rationalized away, the greenrider huddles over his klah and manages to do a very good job of looking like his mind's in another world entirely. Listening in on conversations is an old habit of his, since it's so very difficult to join them, and people tend to assume that just because he can't talk, he can't hear them, either. As frustrating as it is to be talked about like he's not there, it's balanced out by hearing interesting things that are really none of his business. And it's not like he spreads what he hears; even if it wasn't so difficult to make himself understood to most others, R'ven just isn't the type to gossip. In fact, he quickly finds that their conversation is completely uninteresting. Even his own relationships have never been of much interest to R'ven - not that he takes them for granted, far from it, but he doesn't spend much time thinking about them - and other people's are completely irrelevant to him. The flurry of movement nearby draws what little attention had been left on the trio to the young man at the other end of the table. He'd sat down assuming M'telle was asleep, but it seems he's woken up. This time, R'ven doesn't try to hide the fact that he's watching, since he can hardly imagine the boy taking offense at it.

Other things, however, he might justifiably being annoyed by. Three small shapes appear suddenly out of between, flocking to their human; bronze Vey and green Kree land on R'ven's shoulders, while imperious gold Athena perches on the back of his chair and firmly grips his long pale blond braid with three sets of talons and a tail. /Did Massath chase you away?/ he asks, and recieves a mental chorus of assent. He snorts. /I can't say I blame her, from the way she was complaining about you three earlier. Helping to bathe her is helping. Carrying mouthfuls of water from the lake to drop on her when she's trying to sleep is not helping. I hope she gave you a good scolding./ The agreement is more subdued this time. Then they look around, chastened only so much by the big green's anger, and spy M'telle and his hatching egg. Being firelizards, excited by any birth, they immediately set up a hum, and as one start to surge towards the young man, though Athena attempts to drag the end of R'ven's braid with her. Reaching out, he grabs Vey and Kree by the tails and gently but firmly drags them back, managing to reel in Athena by the simple expedient of hooking his elbow around the braid, since she seems to have caught a talon in it. (Or perhaps she's just that determined to hang on to it. All sorts of strange firelizards have been trying to play with it recently, after all, and she has to make sure that everyone understands R'ven's pretty tail is hers.) /Leave him alone!/ he orders them sternly, and Kree, cowed, wriggles free only to scuttle back to his shoulder. Athena seems to take this order as the final weight on the scales, tipping the balance all the way back to "cling to R'ven's braid possessively and glare at any firelizard that tries to come near him". Vey, on the other hand... well, despite years of patient, determined training, Vey's never been good at orders. Since R'ven doesn't want to hurt his firelizards, he's not gripping Vey's tail very hard, and the little bronze gives R'ven a defiant look before twisting free and skittering across the table to stare down at the newly-hatched green. He carefully doesn't touch M'telle's hand, but there's an undertone of smugness in his delighted chirp. A moment later, R'ven rises - wincing a bit at the weight of a gold firelizard dangling from his scalp, before she catches on and flutters up to his free shoulder with her claws still tangled in the braid - and takes a few steps down the table to scoop up Vey, with a stern glare directed at the bronze. /Bad! When I tell you to leave them alone, I mean for you to leave them alone!/ Startled at his human's vehemence, Vey squeaks and curls in on himself, while R'ven gives M'telle the most apologetic look his expressive face can muster. He's gotten very, very good at expressive looks over the years.
