These days, if Child Protective Services ever got wind of someone punishing their child in this fashion, I should imagine they'd very quickly be relieved of any further parental responsibilities. Additionally, they'd likely - and deservedly - be brought up on child abuse charges.

Marcey, I don't know what you could have done to bring about such an overbearing response from your mother, but what I don't understand is this desire or need to not just inflict pain and distress, but also to embarrass and humiliate as a form of punishment. The idea of a mother doing this to her own child - much less any human being - sounds like something from the darkest chapters of a Stephen King novel.

I pray this practice ended with you

I just totally disagree using them to punish, humiliate or embarrass anyone in any way.
