Both the old leather dog leash we sometimes got it with and the cane usually hung on a hook in my mother's broom cupboard, along with the brooms, dustpans and the vacuum cleaner. If one of us children was to be punished, we had to fetch the instrument from the kitchen first, often already crying.

The hairbrush Mom used was kept in the drawer of a side table beside the couch in the living room. Her ruler was kept in her desk drawer which was in alcove off the kitchen. Dad's belt was kept in the hall closet underneath the stairs. The paddle was kept in the garage hanging on the wall next to Dad's workbench. Other than the paddle, the implements were out of sight, but never too far out of hand.
